I'm taking a digital art class at school now, and I thought I'd post any projects that I do up here for a little critique. They will mostly be works in progress, because I want to get the forums opinions about my work before I turn it in. I will mostly deal in Illustrator (a bitch of a program to get used to after working primarily with Photoshop) CS2, although some Photoshop CS2 stuff will be shown as well.

Here's my first project. I basically have to take this picture:

Attached File  MacNBfrontAsmaller.jpg (29.65K)
Number of downloads: 2

And redraw it in Illustrator by hand with one of those pens and pads. They take a bit to get used to, but they're pretty fun to just mess around with. Anyway, here's what I've done so far with it. Now it's not supposed to be a direct translation from the above picture, mind you. I've taken some artistic license with it, mostly because I can't draw to freakin' save my life.

I'm no expert at rating things like this, but it looks pretty good to me.

Are you planning on adding a keyboard to it?

Oh yeah, definitely. That part's gonna be a bitch, but it shouldn't take too long. This was done during my 3 hour class today.

EDIT: Oh, and I don't know why there are two of the original up there. I tried to edit one out, but it wasn't in the post code, so I dunno.

Wow, I think that looks pretty damn good, Kvitne! How do you even do art like that?

Well, he's using Illustrator CS2 and will be sometimes be using Photoshop CS2 for his creations.

I'm guessing that Illustrator's a program similar to, but a lot better than Paint Shop Pro.

Well, good luck on that keyboard Kvtine. I understand how you feel about that keyboard, especially since you're drawing it from a perspective where it gets smaller as you go to the right.

Ohhhh, okay. That makes sense.

Oh, and good luck with drawing up that keyboard, Kvitne! :)

Illustrator is not like Paint Shop Pro at all. Illustrator is more like Flash without the animation abilities, if I have to simplify it to something like that.

Looking good Kvitne. Good luck with the keyboard, betcha it'll be a bitch.

Yeah, I'll just have to work on the details really carefully.

To expand on what Sway said, I'll explain what the basic difference between Illustrator and Photoshop is. Photoshop is a raster-based image program, which means when you resize images to make them bigger they become all pixellated. On the other hand, Illustrator is a vector-based image program, which means that you can make the image any size that you want without losing the quality of the image. This is because Illustrator is based around mathematical formulas. It's really not a program for doing really intricate detail in. You mostly draw in shapes.

Here's how it ended up in the final part. I would have liked to have made it better and more detailed, but I was working on a deadline, so oh well.

As I predicted, the keyboard was a bitch. However I think I pulled it off pretty well. It's not where I'd like it to be in terms of quality, but it's adequate.

You need to skew the letters, but pretty good job.

Yeah, the teacher tried to teach me how to do that, but I asked way before I needed to do it, so I forgot. Then I didn't have enough time before it was due to figure it out.

Select letters > Object > Transform > Shear, if you're wondering.

Cool, thanks. I might fiddle around with it if I ever get the chance.

Those keys are well done. I'm guessing that skewing them means slanting the letters so they'll actually look more normal?

Man, Kvitne, that computer's looking sweet! B). And even though the letters on the keys aren't slanted (or "skewed"), the keyboard turned out very nice! :)

Here's the beginning of my next project. Basically we could only use one letter to create this one, not pen tool, no paint brush, just text and some other tools, like the warp tool and the anchor selection arrow. It's turning out pretty good so far. I'll be adding in a few more little guys and some clouds.

Oh, and if you can't tell which letter I used, it's the g.

Yeah, our teacher likes this wacky kind of art, so I'm playing to his tastes.

I was wondering what the hell when I first saw that image.

Nice work. Why are all of those little guys in the shape of a lowercase "g"?
