'Street Fighter' packs Hyde Park punch
Duo team to bring vidgame to bigscreen
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK, NICOLE LAPORTE

Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom Ltd. are getting in the ring for a film version of popular vidgame franchise "Street Fighter."

Scribe Justin Marks has been tapped to adapt.

Hyde Park and Capcom -- Japanese publisher of "Street Fighter" -- will produce the film in a joint venture.

Pic will focus on the game's most popular female fighter, Chun Li, but the exact storyline is being kept under wraps.

In 1994, Universal released a "Street Fighter" movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme that featured most of the characters from the game.

Hyde Park and Capcom's film is targeted to bow in 2008, the 20th anniversary of the game franchise.

The Street Fighter series helped ignite the arena fighting genre that's still popular in the vidgame world.

When it first debuted, it generated heated controversy over the graphic depictions of violence.

Though it has been less popular in recent years as the number of competitors has increased, "Street Fighter" games have sold over 25 million console games and 500,000 arcade units, generating more than a billion dollars in revenue.

Marks just completed writing "Voltran" for producer Mark Gordon.

He is repped by William Morris Agency.

Hyde Park will be selling the project at the American Film Market, which unspools this week in Santa Monica.

Whaaaaa!!!!

Focusing on CHUN-LI?! That's just WRONG. Step aside, woman, and give Alex the spotlight.

Bt so long as Ming-Na Wen stays out of it, and we get a Guile with an American accent, we're set.

I guess they're focusing on Chun-Li to give it a kind of investigative spin, what with Interpol hunting Shadoloo and all... I dunno. Shot in the dark...

I do agree they should put Alex in the spotlight, if for no other reason than he would be a VERY marketable character to the general, American audience.

They do. Ken on Ken 2: Homo Boogaloo

And yeah, Alex would totally sell in the USA. They won't put him in, but it's alwayd fun to pretend. I guess we'll have to wait for the Amy Rose Show feature film, (coming in Winter '09...)

Great idea guys, make a Street Fighter movie and have it come out almost ten years after the last new Street Fighter game was made. Maybe next up we'll finally get that King's Quest movie...

They already made a "Street Fighter: The Movie" Video Game, and guess what? It sucked. Hard.

Seriously, though, a new SF game doesn't seem likely. Capcom has stated many times that they're done with the series, and I can't say I don't blame them.

I never heard them say they're done. At all, really. Most that they said was that they don't know where to go from where it left off.

Capcom is putting way too much thought into it, I think. I mean hell, SNK puts out a new KOF game every year, and they don't have to justify it to their audience; they just make the fucking games. Regardless of whether or not they've said so, I'm pretty sure Capcom is done with 2D fighting games. I think those are part of the "Old Capcom" image that the company is currently trying desperately to shed, and that's why all their latest releases have either been anniversary collections or barely-updated ports. I think at the very most we might get one or two more thrown-together "crossover" games like Capcom Fighting Evolution, but I wouldn't expect too much more than that.
