Wet Hot American Summer
1 hour 37 minutes / R
Directed by: David Wain
Starring: Michael Showalter, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Christopher Meloni
This is my absolute favorite comedy ever. It's a perfect spoof/homage to some of the 70s/80s comedies many of you are familiar with, while at the same time being its own story. You might recognize most of the cast from the old MTV skit show The State, though it has some stars like Garofalo and Pierce. This movie went way under the radar, but Comedy Central does show it from time to time (DO NOT WATCH THIS VERSION, CENSORING FOR TV RUINS IT).
Basically, the plot of the movie is that it's the last day of summer camp and the film focuses on certain campers/counselors who want closure to the summer. It's all really just a way to tie together the truckloads of priceless jokes and gags.
I have never laughed so hard in my life as I did watching this movie for this first time. It's just that brilliant. If you love The State, Stella, or Reno! 911, you will love this movie. I don't really know what else to say. It's the perfect comedy. Please watch.
He's right; it is fucking hilarious. Glad he got me to watch it!

But if anyone I know has it, I'll borrow it, or beat them to death with it then steal it.

Oh come on, you love AD, of course you're going to enjoy this comedy. It's not mainstream crap like Employee of the Month.
Alright, here's some video:
The trailer, which doesn't really do the film justice at all.
The first six minutes, which are nothing special, but hopefully it gives you a feel for the movie.
A fine excerpt, the Waterville montage and fondue with cheddar.
My favorite scene, don't watch unless you can't be convinced to see this movie any other way.

YES! Seriously, I normally don't even like stoner comedies that much, but that is one fucking hilarious movie.
Sorry for going off-topic here Sway, I just felt that Shmeckie and everyone else reading this needed to know about the greatness of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.

Alright, well, Kvitne saw it at least, so I'll give it a final try. I thought a great deal about what to do this month, and I think I'll go with...

L.A. Confidential, the story of three policemen in 1953 who are caught up in a mixture of lies, sex, corruption and murder following a killing spree at the Nite Owl coffee shop. The story encompass organized crime, political corruption, heroin, pornography, prostitution, tabloid journalism, plastic surgery and Hollywood. 1950s Los Angeles is the seedy backdrop for this intricate neo noir tale of police corruption and Hollywood sleaze. Three very different cops are all after the truth, each in their own style: Ed Exley, the golden boy of the police force, willing to do almost anything to get ahead, except sell out; Bud White, ready to break the rules to seek justice, but barely able to keep his raging violence under control; and Jack Vincennes, always looking for celebrity and a quick buck until his conscience drives him to join Exley and White down the one-way path to find the truth behind the dark world of L.A. crime.
Though the movie garnered several big nominations at the 1997 Academy Awards, the nation had Titanic fever, effectively ruining any chance this brilliant movie had at Best Picture. Although this movie was overlooked both by the Academy and the movie-going public (with a $53 million box office), this just may be one the smartest movies you haven't seen. With great performances from an ensemble all-star cast and a clever script, the dramatic tension of this modern film noir classic makes it a must-see in my opinion. Told through a variation on the theme of "good cop, bad cop" with an overarching corruption angle, this film cleverly deals with issues of racism, social justice and ethics in a non-discriminatory manner. Character development is well done and the dramatic tension is superb. The twists and turns this movie takes will keep you guessing until the end.
Every single aspect of this film fits together perfectly, from the wonderful performances, the beautiful cinematography, the magnificent soundtrack, the intriguing storyline, and the expert timing and directing. The movie explodes out of its genre, replacing the expected with the unexpected. The film brings an era to life that is normally dulled in our collective memory like an aging black-and-white photograph with an impressive effort made for authenticity. The contrast between the deep dark depths of the human soul and the broad daylight imagery is powerful. There is not a single traditional "good guy" in the entire movie, and yet it won't leave the viewer apathetic about the outcome. L.A. Confidential manages to evoke a range of emotions, exploring in depth the complex, dual human nature of many of its characters. This is a movie you can see over and over and get something new out of it every time.
So please, see this movie. For me.

Anyway, has anyone else seen this thing? It's LONG and SLOW. It's a GREAT movie, don't get me wrong, but you know when you're watching a movie, and a scene just goes on 5 minutes too long? This whole movie is like that. But, this fucker is indeed epic. The Naval battle and the chariot race are CRAZY.
Most of the awe will be lost on us, though, because let's face it, everything they did back then that required months of training, crazy-ass sets, thousands of extras, we can just do with computers nowadays.
Good stuff. 2-discs long, but good stuff.
