Alright, just a small heads-up. I don't know anything about Superman mythos. I know Lois Lane, Clark kent, and Kyrptonite. That's all. I didn't know anything about Spiderman when I saw that in the theatre, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the movie. But Spiderman was a good movie. Superman Returns isn't.
Anyway, without giving the movie away, I would avoid this one. It's not a remake like some people think. (Atleast, I thought it was going to be...) It's hard to follow, most of the 'action' shots with Supes' in them are fairly shakey (Camera-wise) and Lois Lane is in the movie WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too damned much. Most of the movie is the usual 'Alter-ego loves girl but girl loves another guy' scenario. Spiderman did it better. Lex Luger (or is it Luther? Which one is the wrestler?) makes the movie, however. I imagine if you're a Superfan, you'll probably enjoy far more than I did.
The best part of the movie was the SpiderMan 3 trailer...

Ah. Now I have a reason to go see this movie other than the fact that I need to get out of the house more.

I completely disagree with Muzzy.
When I first started getting info on Superman Returns, I thought it was going to be terrible. Once we got a real trailer and I started hearing the hype, I thought this was going to be the most exciting superhero movie ever made. The truth of the matter is it's somewhere in between, but closer to my second thoughts than my first. It's not quite as good as Batman Begins or Spider-Man 2, but it's probably right after those two, making it an excellent film.
I went to see this in IMAX 3D opening night, and it was well worth the money.
Superman Returns is an overly engaging cinematic piece that is both visually and emotionally invigorating. The homages to the classic Donner film and various references peppered throughout shows that Singer has a zealous, stalwart passion for the comic world’s greatest superhero.
Each adrenaline pumping, edge of your seat action scene is done in such a flawless manner. The mere sight of Superman preventing a plane from crashing, using the various powers he possesses, and lifting a massive crystal island, lobbing it into outer space are just some things that make your jaw drop. Brandon Routh does an excellent job portraying both Clark Kent and Superman, much so that it would make the late Christopher Reeve proud. The heartfelt story involving Superman and Lois is a nice balance and contrast to the bumbling Clark’s relationship with miss Lane. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and Bosworth as Lois Lane are both very well done. Sam Huntington, who plays Jimmy Olsen, was perfect. Even Lois' son was perhaps the only under-seven child actor ever that I was not incredibly annoyed with. I was happy with everyone’s performance in this film.
There's not a whole lot of action, but where there is, it's fantastic. 250+ million dollars looks very pretty, and the set pieces are gigantic and awesome. I think they did a great job of balancing practical effects versus CGI in that I really couldn't tell the difference 95 percent of the time.
There are some problems with the movie that detract from the overall experience and put it just below the very top tier of the genre. In the original 1978 Donnor film and the sequels, Lex Luthor was more comic relief than threatening villain, and this trend continues in Superman Returns. I like Kevin Spacey as Lex a lot, but the balance between comedic and menacing never quite worked for me. He's not scary at all for about 90% of the movie, and then all of a sudden he's supposed to act really sadistic, and it just didn't seem right to me. I would have preferred more of a Clancy Brown or Michael Rosenbaum approach to the character. Lex's evil scheme also does not make much sense, but I don't want to spoil anything. Parker Posey's character was annoying in some parts. Finally, the "twist." Now we're stuck with this for the sequels, and it seems like it's going to weigh things down.
This movie is epic, and revitalizes the original Superman classic in such a way that it is sure to please the most avid of Superman fans, as well as hesitant newcomers. It breathes new life into the man of steel. It would seem that Superman Returns gives new light to superhero cinema, much like Superman’s purpose within this hero universe. The bar has been raised in many respects, and a new standard has been set for action scenes. What great feats of heroism awaits for the cinema is something I look forward to.
