Futurama is honestly, no joke, coming back.

Comedy Central Revives 'Futurama'
Latest Fox Project to Reappear on Cable

By James Hibberd

Three years after Fox canceled the show, Matt Groening's "Futurama" will resume production for a 13-episode run on Comedy Central. The new episodes will be added to the network's library of 72 "Futurama" episodes previously licensed from 20th Century Fox Television. Voice talent Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio will return for the new episodes, which will debut in 2008.

"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library, but something they've never seen as well," said David Bernath, senior VP, programming, Comedy Central.

"Futurama" marks the third Fox project revived by basic cable in recent years. New episodes of "Greg the Bunny" are being ordered by IFC, and Fox resurrected "Family Guy" after the series found success on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Plus the four movies are still a go. This is awesome.

I just hope Futurama has a better revival than Family Guy, which went from funny, to meh, to DEAR LORD IT HURTS WHEN I LOOK!

I'd trust David Cohen and Matt Groening well above Seth MacFarlane any day myself. I'm only worried about Comedy Central fucking it up.

Don't see how they would. The only thing Comedy Central tends to fuck up is what it greenlights. Since they got a good property this time, they can do no damage...

Well, if we're to believe Dave Chappelle, they might try to have some say in this and that, but they've certainly been okay with South Park and The Daily Show and any of their other highly acclaimed shows, so I think it'll be fine too.

The new episodes of the Simpsons have made me weary of anything Groening is involved with... I certainly hope the new episodes will live up to the show's former greatness, but yeah... We'll see what happens.

Well, keep in mind the SImpsons has been on so long that they've run out of ideas forty times over.

The problem with The Simpsons actually is that Groening isn't very involved anymore, focusing on other things, like Futurama, instead. Besides, I think David X. Cohen is the real genius behind everything anyway.

Also on a DVD commentary they said they had a general storyline mapped out for ten seasons, so if they weren't full of shit, hopefully that means that things will stay up to snuff.

That all said, I still enjoy new episodes of The Simpsons from time to time.

I find that watching the Simpsons is kind of like playing Russian Roulette anymore... Every now and then you'll encounter a decent, honest-to-god funny episode (the one that was on the other night with Marge becoming a mother figure to Rod and Todd is a good example), but most of the time the newer episodes are just so poorly written that they're almost unwatchable. So they're not all garbage... Just mostly garbage.

The Simpsons became so unfunny to me that I stopped watching it often around 2004. Now I only watch it when I've got nothing else better to do, sometimes.

Reviving! Why? Fun news, courtesy of my brother's Toyfare magazine!

Toyfare had an interview with David X. Cohen, and discussed the upcoming season of Futurama. Here's some highlights...

- Season takes place 2 years after the last season finale.

- Relationship between Fry and Leela will immediately be touched upon.

- New character: Nudar, the nudist alien. Cohen doesn't yet know about Comedy Central's policy of "showing unrecognizable alien reproductive organs".

- DVD of the new season will contain a full, 22 minute episode of Everybody loves Hypnotoad.

- New season will feature more continuity than ever, and will explain thus-far unknown facts about Nibbler, dark matter, and Seymour the dog.

- Everyone from the show is back. Even the animation studio.

Hmm, oh, I'm sorry, were there other points in your post?

Seriously though, as someone who has finally gotten all the seasons on DVD and is devouring all the commentaries (one for every episode!), this truly... is... good news. Thanks for the update.

I'm not even that big of a Futurama fan, and this all sounds pretty awesome to me. Again, I just really hope the new episodes don't suck, or that they pull a Family Guy and suck at first and then get better again, since 22 episodes isn't much time to pull out of suck territory.
