O'Brien, Richter reteam for detective comedy

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Conan O'Brien and his former sidekick on NBC's "Late Night," Andy Richter, are reuniting for NBC primetime, and this time Richter is the leading man.

The network has ordered "Andy Barker P.I.," a detective comedy pilot starring Richter, which O'Brien co-wrote and is executive producing.

Richter plays the title character, an accountant who sets up a business in an office formerly belonging to a private investigator. As he starts panicking that no clients are coming in, people looking for the office's previous occupant begin to give him detective cases that he somewhat reluctantly takes on.

"Andy Barker" stems from a germ of an idea O'Brien had been kicking around for a while. In the fall, he teamed with Jonathan Groff, former longtime head writer of "Late Night," and the two quickly developed and wrote the pilot.

The key to the lead character is that he doesn't change when he accidentally falls into a career as a detective, Groff said.

"This is just a different way for him to be who he is -- a really decent, ethical guy for whom everything has worked out through hard work," Groff said. "He approaches (private detecting) with the same level with decency; he would lecture bad guys that it's better to buy, not rent, their hideaway place."

From the initial stages of developing the central character, O'Brien and Groff thought of Richter as the perfect actor for the role. Richter quickly came on board, and the part was written for him.

Also cast in the pilot as Andy Barker's wife, Ruth, is Amy Farrington, who has a recurring role on CBS' upcoming comedy "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

Richter previously starred in the short-lived Fox comedy "Andy Richter Controls the Universe."

Many of you probably do not remember the Andy days of Conan, but he at one time was an integral part, and for me, it's great to see them working on something together again. And Conan writing again, awesome. He wrote for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, so it's very cool to see him return to that, if only briefly. I can't wait for this pilot.

Sway's sentiments are my own. Especially the part about Conan writing again. If I remeber correctly, he was writing on that show (Simpsons) back when all the famous old episodes were new. I know he wrote for some of SNL's best years, though.

Conan's most famous Simpsons work is probably "Marge vs. the Monorail" and the "Treehouse of Horror IV", and his most popular SNL sketches were probably "Mr. Short-Term Memory" and "The Girl Watchers". He also created the sea captain character on The Simpsons.

Agreed. I came here thinking that Sway finally lost his virginity.

Because you love reminding us just how horny you are, whether or not we care. And Sel's just got a fanfiction-like hate-love for Sway, so that's normal.

But Conan made the sea-captain?! Sweet! And I loved those skecthes, too. Now that I think about it, he has an uncanny ability to take something that would otherwise be simple or stupid, and just make it hilarious.

Ha ha, oh my god, Marge vs. the Monorail is my all-time favorite episode of the Simpsons! I had no idea Conan O'Brien wrote that one... The guy's definitely a comedy genius, and I look forward to this new project of his.

When it comes to Conan, it is sexual.
