SOE TO CREATE DC COMICS MMORPG
Posted: 10:19 on 20 Jun 2005

Sony Online Entertainment signs a collaborative deal with Warner Bros. to develop an MMO featuring the DC characters...

Sony Online Entertainment and Warner Bros. have today announced a collaborative deal to create an MMORPG based on the DC Comics universe, which includes such luminary superheroes as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The game, which is being developed for PC and next-generation consoles is pencilled in for a fourth quarter 2007 release. As well as producing the DC MMO, part of the deal includes the acquisition of Warner Bros.’ The Matrix Online by SOE. The game had been published by SEGA last year, and has been continuing the storyline of the Matrix Trilogy, which has seen vampires take control of the Megacity as well as the death of Morpheus.

Announcing the deal, John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment said, "By working with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment we will fuse the knowledge SOE has in the online space with some of Warner Bros.' phenomenal properties…SOE will work closely with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics to maintain the authenticity consumers demand from the DC Comics franchises. We will also take steps to continue the same high level of service that subscribers have come to expect from The Matrix Online game."

"Our goal is to deliver quality content and consistently advance our key properties within the online games space," said Jason Hall, Senior Vice President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "We've done just that with The Matrix Online. Because of our compelling work in developing and launching that game we can now move it over to the leaders in the MMO space, SOE. We look forward to working with SOE to enhance our overall services to massively multiplayer online gamers for The Matrix Online and a new DC Comics game."

"Expanding our fans' ability to participate in the DC universe through a great online game is a terrific step forward for DC Comics," said Paul Levitz, President & Publisher of DC Comics. "We look forward to working with our colleagues at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and the talented folks at SOE."

When the MMORPG is finally launched in 18 months time, it is sure to prove an irresistible purchase for many comic book/videogames fans, especially if the game includes many of the key cities and areas from the DC universe such as Metropolis and Gotham city. Whether gamers play as DC characters or whether they create their own superhero (a la City of Heroes) is yet to be announced. We’ll have more shortly...

Imagine a bunch of Batmen and Supermen running around Gotham City... God, I hope they let you create your own character, there aren't enough real ones to go around!

Exactly. Marvel Comics was thinking of doing the same thing, but the problem was you either have to create your own character, which isn't too different from City of Heroes, or you have 20,000 Superman running around. Or one person is locked into a superhero on a first come, first serve basis.

I think it will probably be like The Matrix Online, where you can create a character and the real franchise characters are just part of the story. I don't see that as really appealing, but hey, it'll make some money.

To bad it isn't Marvel though, I find Marvel Comics to be much better than DC Comics. That dissapoints me a little. <_<

Hmmm.... Maybe it'll be like a class system, where each Superhero is a class, and you can just learn their skills?
I'm just asking for trouble, aren't I?

Not too out there. Both the twins and Persephone were vampires, for instance.

What the hell is up with all these MMORPG's coming out lately? PC gaming has pretty much seemed to ditch just about every single game genre out there except for first-person shooters, MMORPG's, and the occasional real-time strategy. It seems as though they've got an MMO for just about every possible setting and major license at this point...

Which reminds me... Sway, how's the development of the Sonic Online MMORPG coming along? I'm really enjoying playing my level 19 Muzzy in the closed beta, although I think you should nerf his Sarcasm skill in the next patch.

Well the thing is, I was storing all my code on ezboard, y'see... and, well, that... didn't go too well. So I'm having the Duke Nukem Forever guys working on it from the start again. I expect it to be done by 2013.

Coming up next; the Duke Nukem MMORPG, the Red Alert FPS, and the Everquest RTS!

2013? Wow, somebody's optimistic.

[long silence]

...Did, did we just make a Duke Nukem Forever joke?

EDIT: And they actually already have an Everquest RTS. And they also made a FPS based on Command & Conquer, just not Red Alert.

Actually, I do.

This game doesn't sound like it's the best. Like some other people in this thread have pointed out, there too many MMORPG's coming out right now. I doubt that it will be different than any other "super hero" game out there. I'd rather them stick to Everquest and all of that stuff. Are they releasing a console version of this?

Not the best, but I posted.
