Um... it's kind of hard to give ideas. Sure, I have ideas, but the question is, can you execute them? I'd use the healing brush (band-aid) and clone stamp in Photoshop, plus the lasso tool and some feathering to the selection, but I don't know if you know how to use any of those.
What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know.

It's a crazy brush. Basically what it does is takes a point you selected and repaints that over whatever you wish, but intelligently blends it in so that it's seamless if you are skilled enough.

Oh, I dobut you do then. You will probably have to select with the lasso, feather the selection by 5 to 10 pixels, and paste, then repeat.

Well, a sprite picture, unless very high resolution, probably would look pretty weird, I'd say try for non-sprite first.
