Chapter 1: The Calling
It was 1:35 in the morning. Not a single street lamp was lit. All was pitch black, save the moon which shed only a small trickle of light on the abandoned streets. The buildings looked deserted; smashed windows, wooden panels, debris in the street, cigarette butts that still clinged onto their final embers and a host of others things were strewn about. From the blue moonlight, a long shadow could be seen, accompanied by the noise of footsteps on asphalt. The figure turned the corner, indifferent to all that was around him. It kept walking until it reached a building, one that was still inhabitable. Slowly, the figure crept up the staircase that was lit by a dying lightbulb, flickering on and off at high speeds. It reached an office door and opened it. It crept over to the desk and sat down, falling asleep there. All was dark and quiet for several minutes until another figure barged in and turned on the lights. "where the hell were you, ace?!?!?!?", the interloper screamed. It was a badger, a chubby one at that, with a striped suitcoat and pants. He wore Italian shoes and smoked on his cigars. He wasn't a kind fellow, in fact, everyone who he ever employed hated his guts. He was a greedy, yet wealthy man who was tempermental. The other figure, the one called Ace, looked up at his boss.
"Getting coffee," Ace said calmly, as if he enjoyed seeing the badger angry. Ace was a wierd person in many ways. His face was that of an echidna's, yet his spikes that came from his head resembled that of a hedgehog. Ace had three quills on each side of his head, one side being the mirror image of the other. His fur was an extremely dark blue color with tinted orange highlights on his spikes. He wore a special neck brace that had two orbs on the left and right sides. From the orbs, Ace's cloak flowed gently down his back. His shirt was worn, except for the parts covered by metal plates. The same type of metal plating also covered the outer sides of his nondescript pants. His gloves had a stripe in the middle of them, each different part colored a different shades of blue. His tennis shoes were colored the same. Ace's eyes were two different colors, one brown, one gray.
"Grrr....get back to work ace!!!!!" The badger shouted.
"Yeah, yeah. Don't kill yourself," He responded calmly again. The boss was furious. They ran a detective facility, but that was more of a front than a job. Secretly, they were running a bounty hunting service, willing to do anything for money. The badger left and slammed the door, causing tons of loose objects and random papers to fly about the room. Ace did nothing and went back to sleep. He wasn't worried. He didn't care about anything. His life was over. All that waited him in the future was his inevitable death. Many bad decisions led him to this point and although he didn't care on the outside, Ace regretted each and every mistake. His past was bad, but he still lives, and that's all that mattered to him.
Next morning, Ace woke up in his chair. After letting out a big yawn, Ace got out of the battered wooden chair and stretched. The day wasn't looking good weather wise and the forecast didn't show any improvement. Ace sat down and sighed in boredom. Finally, opportunity rang, literally. The phone rang like there was no tomorrow. Ace slowly picked it up and responded.

Chapter 2: The Client
A weak, feable, and feminine voice spoke Ace saying, "Sir...I need aid of your services. There is....well....I....don't really like to talk about it, but I would be happy if you came to the south end of Dusain Street".
"City border, right? Okay. I'll be there in....I don't know, just wait for me," Ace responded. He got up out of his chair and hung up the phone, not giving the woman a chance to even say a word. Ace got up from his chair and slowly walked out of his office. His boss was still sleeping in another wrecked office, mostly destroyed from his personal rage than ages of abandonment. Ace walked back down the stairs and walked out the front door. The sky was gray and thunder could be heard in the distance. Nothing had changed from the night before, except for the fact that you could see the city, at least what used to be a city. The city of Haidsburg used to be a thriving city of science, full of life. Sadly, a explosion from the power facility, that used both nuclear and heat energy to support the city, destroyed almost everything. There was still a huge crater where the eruption was.
For Ace, it was all just part of his average day, all part of the scenery. Ace drove his rusty Cadillac down to the end of Dusain Street, where the road merged into the highway that once carried traffic out of the city. On the way, his past haunted Ace. He remembered how it all began. His father died before he even got to see Ace. His mother went into a coma after giving birth. He was then brought to a medical facility where he and his mother were placed in containment pods. There, the scientists nutured his body, for he was born with an unknown illness. After the scientist healed him, they became devious and began testing on his body, trying to see if they could rearrange Ace's DNA to make him stronger without steroids. From that experience, Ace grew his spikes and his eye colors changed. He was then forced to take care of his mother and fend for himself. He made many bad choices from the fights he got in to the everyday things he did. Then the explosion hit. His mother was killed by the blast with many others. The survivors had only were forced to make a decision: move or stay in the ruined city. The poor were left behind. The richest of the poor was Ace's boss. Then Ace remembered that he never had a name until his boss called him an ace. He liked the sound of it so he took it as his name.
Finally, Ace reached the end of Dusain Street. The sky had finally opened up and rain poured down as if all the angels in heaven were crying. Under a slightly torn green awning, the client Ace spoke to was standing there. She was a raccoon, a beautiful one at that. Her golden brown fur danced around in the air from the storm's subtle winds. She stood there wearing ordinary sandals, an old skirt that drooped to her knees, and a small top, white in color that could almost pass off as a bikini top. She also wore a bright yellow rain coat and a matching hat to keep from the rain. She was about 20-something years old. Ace walked out of his car, ready to receive his mission. The rain soaked his body thouroughly, but he didn't care. All just part of the scenery.
"Are you the detective I called?" She inquired. Ace smiled a little.
"Yes I am. The name's Ace," He responded.
"My name is Odette Moonfire. I was wondering if you could check out that building, the old steel factory down a couple blocks from here. I've heard a child's laughter from that place, but I have not seen any children in this area for years. Could you check it out?" Odette requested. Ace merely nodded and walked to his car. He then drove off to the old steel factory. He drove down the wet road, avoiding rubble and other debris that was still on the ground from the explosion. After a couple of minutes, Ace parked his car right outside the factory. He got out of the car, covered once again by the senseless downpour. He looked up at the building and then walked in.

Chapter 3: A New World
Ace entered the old factory slowly. A blast of stale air hit him in the face. Piles of gray dust and debris were everywhere. Metal supports holding up balconies and walkways were either rusted completely or lying on the factory floor bent and contorted in a steel mess. The brick wall were brown, as if age turned their once brilliant red color into the dingy color it was now like drawing the life from them. Ace looked around and realized that as a child, he used to play in this building, caring not for the fact it was a screaming metal death trap.
More childhood memories flew about Ace's mind like a pack of hungry animals feasting on their helpless prey. Suddenly, a voice laughed. It was a child's giggle. Ace snapped back into reality and looked around. He started to walk around, faster than before, trying to find the child who was in the forsaken factory. There was a lot of old machinery, rusty and cold, blocking most of Ace's sight. He climbed onto one of the metal processing machines to get a good look around. In a corner, he noticed a child, a small raccoon. Ace thought it must have been a relative of his client, Odette. The child began to run away, laughing the whole way. Ace pursued, hoping to get this amatuer rank job over with.
"Come back!" Ace called out. The child stopped in front of a wall and was smiling. Ace caught up to the raccoon child.
"C'mon little kid, let's go," Ace said kindly. The raccoon child then jumped towards the wall. Ace tried to stop the child from hitting the wall, but he tripped and could only watch. The child, though, went right through the wall. The raccoon was gone, but the wall rippled like water. Ace was bewildered. He got up and brushed the dust off of himself and touched the wall. His hand was able to go through and the wall felt like water. Ace decided there was only one thing left to do: walk through the wall. And he did.
The other side of the wall was magnificent. It was Haidsburg, but rebuilt and full of people. Ace was more confused than ever and tried to return through the wall, only to find that there was no wall behind him. Nothing. Ace felt around and could not feel the liquid metal. He was stuck in this new world.
