Terraria is a game currently still under alpha-testing mode. It is a 2D action/adventure side-scroller similar to Minecraft in concept; you make a character that you can bring into randomly-generated worlds, where you gather materials to create new gear to survive in the harsh environment.

Sounds a lot like Minecraft, doesn't it? Well, yes and no. Yes, one of the main focuses in the game is to gather minerals/materials to craft better equipment to get better materials. But, this game's focus isn't on the gathering; it's the exploring. The worlds that the devs create have many different biomes to explore, where there are different kinds of materials as well as monsters to fight. One of the main focuses in the game is to fight monsters, where it isn't so much in Minecraft. In fact, to progress further, eventually you're going to HAVE to fight monsters.

I have to say that I'm quite looking forward to this game. While Minecraft is pretty fun, it does have its dull moments; sometimes there just isn't anything to really DO. This game seems to take some of the best concepts from the game and expands on it massively.

EDIT:

Be sure to check out the devs' YouTube channel to see what the game is about. There's a video in the link given which can take you to their channel.

UPDATE:

Terraria was released today on Steam; for its first week of release (or possibly longer) the game will be $10.

The official trailer for the game can be found here.

Oh yeah, I heard about this. While Minecraft is a pretty interesting concept, it always seemed to me like a creative application and not so much a "game" in the traditional sense; Terraria looks like more of a genuine interactive experience, with obvious goals and challenges. It's a straight-up action RPG with some MMO elements that incorporates building elements rather than a sandbox construction sim with some vague game-like elements thrown in here and there. I suppose which title you'll enjoy more depends on what you look for in your entertainment.

While Terraria theoretically has a lot of potential to be a really fun experience, I think I'll hang back for awhile and see how the post-release development progresses for a bit before I seriously consider dropping ten bucks on it.

Terrible game for me, personally. The two-dimensional feel is not sand box enough for me to care about it. The game lacks (the 2D might be the main reason) I just can't enjoy it. Not something *I* would personally recommend.

No, it's not made for the Mac. It's written in C#, so it's strictly Windows. Making a port to the Mac will either not happen, or will take a long time.

Honestly, I can see here that MC is still the superior game. Sandbox games are meant to be played on all three planes. Otherwise it is a sandstrip game.

While Minecraft is awesome Terraria sucks.
