I'm in the market to replace my shoddy, 5 year old wireless router with something kick-ass and bitchin. Any suggestions? it needs to have AWESOME signal strength, as I can't get a direct line downstairs where I'm dwelling.

Like any brand name wireless N router. Also, get a wireless N receiver.

Yeah, I have a Netgear Wireless N+ Range. Works great and can get anywhere in my house... and my whole yard. Got my DS linked in our woods before.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing some all important truth in the world. At that point I usually grab some chips and watch the people who have apparently found it tear each other apart in the super market over the now last bag of chips...
