Android or iPhone

Speaking as an Android-based phone owner, I really enjoy it, and the fact that not one company is controlling hardware and software has led to some great strides that Apple simply can't keep up with -- the iPhone hardware is already outdated. That said, the iPhone OS is still put together just a little bit better, and it's extremely polished and nearly bug free in a way Android is not.
If I were you, I'd get an Android phone, just in terms of value, and not being tied to AT&T (big one), but realize that the experience will not be perfect.
Also, I think the Motorola Droids are too bulky -- give me an HTC any day.

Cool, that gives me a nice balance of things to go on. Having the most polished, bug free phone isn't so much a priority to me. I have a BlackBerry, and I'm already pretty used to doing battery pulls every few days. I also hear Trillian is developing an Android application, which is good news as far as things like IM go, which was always a slight concern. The only other one was things like Skype, but I'm not holding out much hope over networks progressing into the modern world and letting us all use Skype more freely.
Google Nav, though, could totally sway me toward an Android.

Google Nav is pretty good considering it's free. I've only observed people using a pro GPS unit a few times, but from my limited experience, Nav is comparable. I took an exit I wasn't supposed to take one time and it got me out of there and back on track in a few minutes.

Android. But only if you get the Droid Incredible. That phone is flawless. Android doesn't lag or chug at all like it does on the Droid or the...well pretty much every other phone that runs Android. Plus the screen is a really high res and a decent (not too big like my HD2, not too small like...Something smaller) size. And it's also got a really accurate and responsive touch screen, unlike most other touch screen phones that I've played with.
But if you have to get an iPhone, wait until they fix the antenna problems with the iPhone 4. Or just get one that doesn't have any reception problems, like the 3GS, and just upgrade the software.

Thanks for the feedback so far!
I'm definitely learning toward an Android phone right now. Apple create some very slick and well finished products but they still have a tendency to lock down features and avoid offering some things nearly other phone manufacturer is, I assume to maximize profits. For example, ability to use an SD Card for additional storage.
Android OS has come such a long way in a short space of time and reports suggest the latest version brings some incredible speed increases for applications. I'll take a look at what is on offer, try a phone different Android phones out, and see how it goes. I'll bear in mind that the Incredible seems best on the market right now. I'm sure I read Samsung are bringing out an Android phone. May also be worth a look.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with what everyone's said here (this is a shocker to you guys, I'm sure). I've got the Droid Incredible, and I've gotta say it's the best phone I've owned so far. I haven't gotten and iPhone yet, but I'll be getting one sooner rather than later since I'm doing development for the platform at my job. If I were giving advice for myself, I'd recommend myself an iPhone. But I like the whole polished thing and half the time I buy apps just because they're beautiful to look at. On the other hand, I'd definitely recommend Android for Req, and from what I've seen so far the Incredible is the best Android phone on the market. Mine does the jobs I need it to do, and doesn't look too ugly in the process. It would suit you nicely.
Oh, and the nav system is awesome. Use it all the time and it hasn't failed me yet.

I have an Incredible myself, but the Evo is a tad better. HDMI out, a front-facing extra camera, and 4G support. Plus the screen is bigger, albeit the same resolution. And it doesn't have that terrible-looking topographic map backside that the Incredible does.

I've heard the same out the Incredible, but that does okay for me? Whenever I hear the battery is bad, it's in comparison with the Droid X. I charge my phone every night, so whatever.

Alright, I don't mean to argue, but 2.3" x 4.63" x 0.47" (Incredible) vs. 2.6" x 4.8" x 0.5" (Evo) is nothing to get rid of that gross backside IMO.
The Motorolas are fucking huge though and their interface looks awful.
