In a Strange Land
Prologue
In the southern continent of western Mobius, there is an underground city known to outsiders as the City of the Ancients but to the people who live there they call it Station Square due to its mass transit system. All of the people are humans and have been living in isolation for millenniums and never been to the outside world. They are self-sufficient so there was no real need to see the rest of the world but little did the people of the city know is that some people from the outside have been immigrated into their city. They were called overlanders, they looked like humans but some of them have four fingers on their hand. Over time they talk about the outside world making the government curious about the outside world.
In about 3217 of the Mobius calendar the one many overlanders to ever come to Station Square was a man by the name Nate Morgan, he was an overlander scientist with ideas about cleaner power sources. When the government showed him the emerald they found when the city was formed, Nate told them about the power it can produce and help the people to generate power to the city. The government wanted to learn more, but Nate thought he help enough and decided to leave them after a one year stay. There wasn’t too much fanfare when he left but the scientists and specialists of Station Square sent him off and left them with ideas about exploring the rest of the world.
Year 3235
In one of the mountains near the one above Station Square is an underground base holding the city’s army called the Guardian Units of the Nation also known as G.U.N.. The base has a port, housing, a hanger, labs, briefing rooms and rec center. In one of the briefing rooms a team of specialists are meeting to discuss the expiration of the outside world of Mobius.
“So what do think we’ll see when get out there,” asked one of the specialists in the front row.
“I don’t know but I would like to see,” said one in the back. The doors to the room opened and in walked a man with two different colored eyes and gray hair, as the people in the room stood up to salute him.
“At ease,” the man said as he went to his podium, making everyone sits down to pay attention. “As you know you men are selected to go to the outer continents of Mobius for recon. Each one of you will be dropped off near the center of the area you’ll be exploring. All you commutations back will go though Com. In your time there you’ll come across mobians, I believe you all have read on this species. You are to avoid coming into contact with them when ever possible. If and when you do make contact you are not engage them unless they pose a threat to you. They’ll no doubt have settlements around the area; observe if possible but avoid detection as much as you can. Is that understood?”
“Yes sir,” said the people sitting down.
“Good,” said the commander, “now I’m going to assign each one of you to a continent, Lee.”
“Sir,” said the shortest of the group as he stood up in attention from the back row.
“You will be going to the Dragon Kingdom, east area of the largest continent,” said the commander. Lee nodded as he sat back down. “Bland,” a tall but medium build stood up and in attention also from the back, “You’re going to Mercia, at the west end of the largest continent,” Bland nodded as he sat back down. “Macentire,” the commander said, making the large man in the front row stand up, “you are going to Downunda, that’s the continent west of ours.” Macentire nodded and sit back down. “And lastly, Cam,” a man of average height and build stood up in attention from the front, “you’re going to the continent to the north of ours.” Cam nodded and sat back down. “Alright you all have your assignments, are there any questions?” Cam raised his hand, “Cam.”
“What are these Mobian’s societies like,” Cam asked.
“Well as you four know I’m an overlander from the Northern continent,” the commander said, “the overlanders and the mobians were at war with each other for five years. We lost when the mobian king dueled with the overlord of the overlanders and lost. Since then we never made contact with them ever again. Some of us even went into space to find another planet to be on while some stayed on Mobius to find other areas to live. I don’t know how there society change or what happened to them, but like I said don’t interfere with them.”
“Understood sir,” Cam said.
“Any other questions,” commander asked, no one raise their hand, “ok then, you four will disembark at 0800 hours, till then you are dismissed.” The four stood up to salute as did the commander and then he left.
“Hey you guys,” Cam said as they stood up to walk down the hallway, “when he said Downunda, did any of you think of that song?”
“Yep,” Macentire (Mac) said, “I hope they aren’t six foot-four and full of muscle.”
“And feed you a vegemite sandwich,” Bland continued.
“OK that enough you three,” Lee said as he headed to his quarters.
“He’s always so serious,” Mac said.
“That was a good movie too,” Cam said they fallowed Lee, “any way you guys let’s get ready.”

AN:
I came up with this idea while I was reading the comic and wondered about how a city could be so self-contained that they wouldn't explore the outside.
Tell me what you all think, like what's missing and needs to go. I’ll take both positive and negative comments if only constructive. Also looking for beta readers.

Chapter 2: Land and Found
Enroot to high above the badlands of the North Continent in the night sky, Cam does a quick equipment check. ‘HUD system ok, hologram, smoke grenades, grapple line, laptop, map, two stun knifes, a week’s worth of food and water and a silenced berretta 92 and FN with assorted ammo for each,’ Cam thought as he finished up.
“You shouldn’t be so tense,” the commander said.
“Sorry sir,” Cam said as he setting up to jump and glancing out the window, “I’m just a little excited that’s all.”
“I’m sure your friends are as well,” the commander said he stood to look out the window of the helicopter, “there she is the north continent.”
“Brings you back doesn’t commander,” Cam said as stood ready.
“I was a foolish man back then,” the commander mused.
“Sir,” Cam said.
“It’s nothing,” the commander said as he turned to Cam, “are you sure you don’t want any type of rifle?”
“It’s ok sir,” Cam said he continued his equipment check, “I prefer side arms.”
“I see,” the commander said, “you ready for your drop?”
“Yes sir,” Cam said.
“Five minutes to drop zone,” the pilot said.
“Alright remember this is recon only you are to only to observe intervene at your own risk,”the commander said, “if discovered you are to run to avoid capture and no retaliation but don’t be afraid to take an opportunity.”
“Understood commander,” Cam said as the helicopter began its decent.
“We’re at the LZ,” pilot said making Cam drop his line.
“Good luck soldier,” the commander said as Cam drops his gear and replied down. The helicopter left as soon as it came heading back home.
Cam made his way to the forest, “all right let’s get started,” Cam said.
Back on the transport
“Commander we’ve got something on radar,” the pilot said making the commander come to the front cabin.
“Is it coming for us,” the commander asked.
“No, but it’s headed near the LZ,” the pilot said.
‘Looks like your skills are going to be put to the test,’ the commander thought, “Head for base, Cam knows what he’s doing.”
“Yes sir,” the pilot said as they made way back to base.
Back near the LZ, Cam was testing his HUD on the surrounding area, “all right, all systems a-ok,” Cam said and then he began to look around, ‘I guess I better look for an area to hide out in.’ As he walked further in the forest a ship flew in close to the tree top over Cam’s head, making him cover his ears due to the load engines of the jet, ‘and here I thought I would get away from that noise,’ Cam thought as he saw lower in altitude up ahead of him, ‘well it looks like I’ll get to observe the locals right off the bat.’ He made his way to the north where he saw the plane hover down about half-mile away when he noticed a wood lookout tower and quickly hid behind a tree to avoid being seen. ‘So they have some sort of defense,’ Cam thought as he looked up at the tower with scope to see an anthromorphic bear and cat, ‘so that what mobians look like. Strange, for a society that has a jet they don’t look like they have any type of fire arms.’ Lucky for Cam the jet landed near the tower so he had a good view of it landing without having to go further, ‘let’s have a look at our arrivals.’
As the jet landed Sonic stepped out and stretched out his arms, “about time we landed,” said the blue anthromorphic hedgehog as his friends exited, “you going to use the sword on your father Sally?”
“Yes,” the female squirrel-chipmunk as she was carrying said sword, “All of you get some rest I will let you all know if it will reveal the location of the crown.”
“Alright let us know first thing Sally girl,” said a the cyborg rabbit, Bunnie she and the rest of the freedom fighters made their way back to their homes and Sally to where her father is at.
Meanwhile Cam was collecting his thoughts at he backed away from, ‘apparently their village is a bit more north,’ Cam thought, ‘I’ll investigate that later, for now I’ve got to find a place to set camp.’ Cam made his way southwest. He made it to a lake, ‘all right a source of water,’ Cam thought. He then heard a sound of a snap and quickly made his way behind a rock, a spear wielding mobian then came and leaned against a rock on the other side of the lake, ‘it seems that this is also their water source as well,’ Cam thought a he made his way back away from the lake and headed east to find another place to camp. After a while he across an empty underground cave, ‘oh this is better, it should be far from that mobian village,’ Cam thought as he made himself at home, ‘after some sleep I’ll scope out that village a bit more.’
The next day Cam returned to the outer reach of the village trying to find a safe way to get close without being seen, ‘well the south is well guarded and so is the west side,’ Cam thought as muse over is findings, ‘but the northeast seems to be less guarded because of the cliffs.’ After time Cam made his way to the top of the cliff above the village getting a better view of the village, ‘all right I getting better view,’ Cam thought as he observed the mobians milling about. Cam then brought his attention to one of the mobians he saw the night before, ‘you’re a strange one,’ Cam mused as he saw the same female rabbit type mobain with cybernetic limbs, ‘so they have cybernetic technology but the low tech environment?’ Cam continued to watch the rabbit as she made her way to a hut, he had some view inside the hut but couldn’t see the mobian that went in, ‘hello what have we here,’ Cam thought as he saw prints of maps or plans, ‘I’ve hit pay dirt on the area. Maybe I find out more intel on who these mobians are.’ Cam continued to scope out the village to find a better entry point till he look up the river to see a waterwheel close to the north cliff connected to a waterfall, ‘found my way in,’ Cam thought as he looked back at the previous hut to see a mobian coyote leave, ‘even better.’ Cam then made his way north along the cliff and came to a patrol road with a few mobian soldiers patrolling. The guards stopped to look over the side of the cliff to look over the view of the village.
“You think the princess is ready for the coming battle,” one of the guards asked.
“She’s got Sonic with her, I’m sure she’ll be fine,” the other said.
While their backs where turned Cam made his way across the road and close to the top of the waterfall, ‘all right so far so good,’ Cam thought as he place his line on one of the trees, ‘here I go.’ Cam repelled down the side of the waterfall and behind the waterwheel. He then looked through a window to that the wheel was connecting to a generator, ‘I didn’t see any lines,’ Cam thought as looked to see that a line from the generator went to a large hut next-door. When Cam got to the hut he heard typing of a keyboard, ‘if that’s a computer, I’ve hit the jackpot,’ Cam thought glance though the window to see a walrus tapping away on a keyboard, ‘well cu-cu cahu.’ ‘This is better than the maps,’ Cam thought as he pulled out his laptop case and pulled out a transmitter, ‘I’m not much of a hacker but with this I won’t have to. Now how do I do I get the walrus to leave?’ At that moment an alarm went off on his computer.
“Apparently there’s some seismic activity in south Robotropolis,” the walrus mused a he looked over the screen, “I better tell the princess.” The walrus then left to the center of the village.
Cam then looked up to the sky, “I like a million bucks,” Cam whispered only to see nothing in his hand, ‘damn.’ He made his way through the window and went behind the computer and attached the transmitter to the computer, ‘all right, all that’s left is to go back.’ Cam made his way back up the cliff and back east, ‘they need to increase internal patrols,’ he thought.
Once Cam made it back to his cave, he turned on his laptop to see if he’s receiving info from the walrus’s computer. “All right it started downloading; I hope that walrus doesn’t find it in the process.”
Back at Knothole village the freedom fighters came back from south Robotropolis, “so tell me Antoine what where you doing in South Robotropolis,” Sonic asked the French coyote.
“It was this map my father left when we evacuated Mobotroplis,” Antoine said as he pulled out a map and show it to the others, “but, I only have half of ze map.”
“But you don’t know what is at the end of the map do you Twan,” Sonic said.
“Sadly no,” Antoine sighed, “I’m going back home to sort out the plan for Robotropolis.”
“Good luck with that sugar-Twan,” Bunnie said.
“Thank you Bunnie and sorry about this morning,” Antoine said.
“Don’t worry about it, you’re just stressed,” Bunnie said as Sally ran to them with NICOLE in hand, “Sally-girl what’s got you in a rush?”
“Trouble, NICOLE is scanning a transmission from Knothole to the outside,” Sally said.
“Source is located in northern Knothole,” NICOLE said in mono.
“I might know,” Rotor the walrus said as he made his way back to his workshop with the others in tow.
“The transmission stopped,” NICOLE said as the freedom fighters made it inside the workshop. A hissing sound was heard as white blaze appeared behind Rotor’s computer. Rotor grabbed a fire extinguisher put out the fire.
“Is any of the equipment damaged,” Sally asked.
“No, but whatever was transmitting is destroyed,” Rotor said as he pick up what was left of the transmitter.
“Do you think its Robotnick,” Sonic asked.
“I don’t know,” Sally said, “if he knew Knothole’s location why would he bother trying to hack Rotor’s computer?”
“Well if Robotnick or whoever did this, they covered their tracks,” Rotor said he brought the burnt transmitter to his worktable, “I don’t believe I can get info on this or where it came from.”
“NICOLE, where you able to scan where it was transmitting to,” Sally asked.
“I was able to get a direction but not a location,” NICOLE said, “the direction was east Sally.”
“East, but that’s in the opposite direction of Robotropolis,” Sally said.
“Do you want me to make a survey of the east area,” Sonic asked.
“Yes and take NICOLE with you,” Sally said as she handed the A.I. computer to Sonic, “in case she detects another signal.”
“On it, I’ll be back in a sonic second,” Sonic said, and then dashed off east.
Back at the Cam’s camp, ‘bout time it finished,’ Cam mused as he tapped on his mini-computer, ‘now to send to HQ.’ He watched as an up load bar moved along the screen, “hopefully bro will make this quicker,” Cam said.
Sonic stopped outside of a clearing, “well NICOLE you got anything,” Sonic asked.
“No I, wait; I’m detecting another transmission,” NICOLE said.
“Where,”
“Five miles south of our current location,”
“Got it,” Sonic said and then sprinted to the south. When Sonic got there he saw cave with some camouflage netting,
“I take it that it’s coming from that cave.”
“Affirmative,” NICOLE said.
“Well let’s see who is home,” Sonic said as he made way in the cave. When he heard something he hid behind a rock and peaked around to size up who was in his village. Sonic saw Cam packing with his back turn to Sonic, ‘it’s an overlander.’
“You can come out from hiding,” Cam said without turning to the blue hedgehog.
“How did you know I was here,” Sonic asked as he came out from behind the rock.
“I should be asking the same thing,” Cam said as he looked behind and noticed the hand held computer Sonic is holding, “I see you have a portable one, no doubt you used it to track me. I’ll have to be more careful when sending intel back home.” Cam then made a little chuckle, “I can here Lee now,” Cam said under his breath, “found on the second day.”
“Tell me, what you were doing in Knothole and are you working for Robotnik,” Sonic asked.
“It was obvious what I was doing in your village,” Cam said as he closed his laptop, “as for Robotnik no, but I might pay that city he’s in a visit later after I make another stop.”
“So you’re not with not with him,” Sonic said.
“Nope,” Cam said as he packs up his gear, “believe it or not you’re the first mobian I’ve ever talked to and seen for that matter.” Cam’s watch started to beep, “well it looks like it’s my time to leave,” Cam said as tried to walk past the hedgehog, only for the mobian, to speed in front of him, “so you are fast.”
“You’re not going anywhere,” Sonic said.
“Sorry, your fast, but you’re not faster than light,” Cam said as he threw a short fuse flash-bang, blinding the hedgehog and quickly making his way out of the cave, setting off another set off charges at the front of the cave trapping the hedgehog in, ‘even with his speed it’ll take him awhile to get out of there.’
A few minutes later Sonic burrowed out of the cave, “I lost him,” Sonic said as he kicked the dirt and sprinted towards Knothole and report back. When Sonic got back to the village he told the freedom fighters about their guest, “and then he got away.”
“I say we cancel the mission on Robotroplis,” said a mobian skunk.
“We can’t do that St. John, it may be the only time we can get Robotnik,” Sally said, “and according to NICOLE, the overlander sent one last message south and not to Robotroplis. So it’s safe to say he doesn’t work for Robotnik but we do need to keep an eye out for him. That’s what I want you and your team to do St. John while we go after Robotnik; I want you to capture him when possible and find out more about him.”
“Gladly,” St, John said as he made his way out.
“Now is there anything else you can tell us about the overlander Sonic,” Sally asked.
“Nope,” Sonic said, “he was in hurry to leave though after his watch beeped.”
“What time did his watch beep,” Sally asked.
“Don’t know I don’t carry a watch,” Sonic said.
“NICOLE you where there,” Sally said as she pulled out NICOLE, “what time was it when his watch beeped?”
“It was 3pm, Sally,” NICOLE said.
“Oh no,” Sally said in shock, “he’s after a power ring. That’s why he was in a rush. Sonic I need you--.” Before she could finish Sonic was already gone.
When Sonic arrived at the lake of rings, he found an unconscious guard by the lake. Sonic rush to wake the guard, waking him up, “what happened,” Sonic asked.
“I don’t know,” the guard said as he tried to stand, “I was about to grab a ring but someone shocked me from behind.”
“I just missed him,” Sonic said as he then notice a round object on the ground near the guard, “you better get back to the village, I sure they sent someone to take your post.”
“I’m on it,” the guard said as he left. Sonic then waited for the next guard to show at the lake. Two mobians came for guard duty to relive Sonic. Sonic then grabbed the round object and took off for Knothole. Sonic arrived at Rotor’s workshop and showed the object to him.
“Can you figure it out Rotor,” Sonic asked as the walrus brought it to his table.
“I should be able to find something,” Rotor said as he pressed one of the buttons on the object. A light glowed from the top of the object in the holographic form of Cam.
“Please note that this is a recording,” the hologram said, “as you know right now I took one of your power rings, and I must say these live up to their name. I hope you don’t mind if I took one, it would help me with my mission and if you’re wondering what my mission is; well I’m not telling, yet. Your guard should be ok; at worst he’ll have a headache. I’ll see if I can hideout in this Robotroplis and find out more about you, though I hope you mobians get your city back. Till then I’ll be watching you,” The hologram then faded.
“Well he doesn’t mean us harm but we should keep an eye out for him,” Sally said, “in the mean time I want everyone well rested when we make our move on Robotroplis.”
In Robotroplis a short overlander was answering a com from his station, “Sir, a high level commutation from Downunda,” the short overlander said.
“Put on screen Sinvly,” said a large overlander, Robotnik, leaning back in a metal chair.
“Yes sir,” Sinvly said as he pushed a button, making a crocodile robot appear on screen.
“This better be good Crocbot,” Robotnik growled.
“Lord Robotnik, we have captured all of the Downunda freedom fighters,” Crocbot said.
“Well that’s good news but hardly worth the high level,” Robotnik said.
“We also captured an overlander as well,” Crocbot said.
“Oh, this excellent news,” Robotnik said in some glee, “Hold the overlander until after I use my weapon on Knothole. Then transport him to me at once.”
“As you command lord Robotnik,” Crocbot said then the com was cut.
“What do you plan to do with the overlander sir,” Sinvly asked.
“Simple, Sinvly,” Robotnik said as he stepped out of his throne, “I want him to tell me where the others are.”

Profile
Name: Cam
Nickname: none
Age: 25
Spices: Human
Skills: proficient in handguns and knowledge in power shield systems, some degree of stealth.
Abilities: Has bionic eyes that allow him to see far, in the night, as well as infra red.
Weaknesses: EMPs render him blind, not good with rifles and not as fast as most of the mobians. Being around any electric substations blurs his vision.
Background
Cam is a specialist solder of G.U.N. and is loyal to Station Square. Joined G.U.N. at the age of 18 and trained in his current skills to be a specialist. By the time he was 23 he volunteered to undergo an experiment to have his eyes be bionic. It was a success and no real problems became of this. He’s friends with his team. His team where assigned solo missions to explore mobius and gather information on the people and area.
