Spider-Man is going to regress.

The "Spider-Man" film franchise is getting a reboot, and this means a big shake-up for those involved in the first three films.

"Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits in the summer of 2012," reads a tweet from the official Sony Pictures Twitter account Monday (Jan. 11).

The post comes on the heels of Nikke Finke's story that "Spider-Man 4" has been scrapped, with director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire out.

Apparently, the recent creative differences caused Raimi to have second thoughts about trying to abide by Sony's schedule. As Zap2it previously reported, the director and studio have been fighting over which villains to cast.

"Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me," said Raimi in a statement that was later issued by Sony. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

"A decade ago ... when we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning."

The new film, aiming for a 2012 release, will be based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenage Peter Parker. Sony promises additional details in coming weeks as they prep for production.

Although loyal Raimi fans will be disappointed, going the reboot route has proved recently successful with the Batman and Star Trek franchise reboots.

Funny, I recall another certain similar popular film series being ruined in a similar way...

Uh, seriously guys? I welcome this after the shit that was Spiderman 3. I mean, think about it. To me the original Spiderman and the sequel were good movies in their own right, but just didn't feel like the character, at least to me. Plus look at how the Batman movies have been revived with Begins and TDK. I'm not judging anything until I see some casting and trailers.

At least it's a better option than Raimi staying on and making another shit movie with a shit script and too many villains.

I'm sorry, but this is too soon for a reboot. I wish we would stop going for the cash cow superheroes, and get a Green Lantern movie. I wanna see a man without fear, damnit. They pulled it off perfectly with Green Lantern: First Flight. Now all we have to do is make it live action. Or maybe a "The Question" movie? Hell, a Lobo movie would be fucking hilarious. We always go for the same brand of shit all the time, rather than the real stuff.

One big thing that bugged me about the whole "Spider Man" movie franchise is that Spidey was not nearly snarky enough as a character, which is kinda integral to him. What I'm tired of is directors sucking out the charm of a superhero in favour of drama, or action. Look at what they did to Deadpool in Origins. He's supposed to make me laugh and go "THAT'S SO BADASS!" at the same time, not one or the other. I just want a good superhero movie for once. One that is actually a worthwhile adaption, like the Dark Knight managed to be.

Well they're making a Green Lantern movie, and a Deadpool one as well. The writers of Zombieland are penning the script for the Deadpool film.

So there going to get a whole bunch of horror movie writers to do a superhero movie?
I'll think of somthing soon.

It was more of a comedy/drama than a horror, dude.

Yeah, it was far more a comedy film set in a world of zombies. Good humor, not childish humor.

I understand this but the original idea of Zombieland came from a group of horror movie writers who asked each other "How gross can we be?"

So yeah.... horror movie writers.

There's a difference between who had the original idea and who wrote the actual script. Plus just because someone writes a horror movie doesn't immediately pigeonhole them as only horror writers. Joss Whedon wrote the script for the upcoming film Cabin In The Woods. Does that make him a horror writer? Fuck no, and it would be an insult to do so.

If they make it like Ultimate Spider-man it should be good.

Eh, so everyone will have to be a douche and dark n' edgy? (sorry, I just find the Ultimate Universe kinda fucked up with how bleak it is)

You know, looking back at Spider-Man, it really did help set the bar for modern superhero movies along with X-Men, but it's really not so great. Spider-Man 2 is the only one that really holds up. I do think it's way too early to reboot the franchise, but hell, I'm not going to miss Maguire/Dunst/Raimi the way I would miss Bale/Caine/Freeman/Nolan.

The difference between the Batman reboot and the Spiderman Reboot is that Spiderman had two good movies before it even became questionable. While I know everyone and their brother hated Spiderman 3, it wasn't a bad movie, it just wasn't a good Spiderman movie. Thus I am skeptical on the reboot. I thought Rami did a pretty good job, and Migure I thought was a perfect Peter Parker.

So long as I don't have to sit through 90 more minutes of MJ Watson mush, I don't care either way.

Actually to me, this is wonderful news. It's never too soon to reboot... not after the trainwreck that was Spiderman 3. It was possibly the worst movie I've ever had to sit through, but that was mostly due to the fact that it made me HATE characters that I've loved since childhood. Peter was whiny, MJ was a spoiled brat (OMG he cares more about saving lives than my play wahhhhhh!!!) and emo-spidey... seriously what the hell? I wanted to see them die, and these are characters I've actually shed tears over in the comic storylines.

It also ruined Vemon, who has always been my favourite antagonist. It took my favourite storyline and pretty much f**ked it up the ass. (please excuse my language, this really gets me... mad...) It was like a parody... a very badly written parody.

No movie made from a comic is ever going to please every fan. It'll never be perfect, but those who make them should at least pretend to give a crap about the characters. And take the damn thing seriously!! Can I bring your attention to Peter... in eyeliner, dancing outside a shop? Do you really want another film made by people who allowed this? o.O;;;

Yes, I enjoyed the first two films. But I disagree that TM was a perfect Peter Parker. To me, he just lacked that essential Spideyness. As someone else mentioned, he wasn't snarky enough. Also, it was painfully obvious in any scenes he cried in that he was just not blinking until his eyes watered. (A small detail, but it just annoyed me lol).

So yes, I'm pleased they're rebooting it. I hope they make a movie on the same level as The Dark Knight, and Iron Man.

Two things. One, we don't really give a shit about swearing, so go nuts. And two...

That ruled.

Lol. Okay I admit, it ruled on one level. Though sitting in the cinema watching it, I stared in disbelief and horror for several seconds before I even laughed. lol.

But honestly... it had no place in the Vemon storyline... It's a dark storyline. I'm all for lightening the mood, but making our hero bodypop...?
