So, this afternoon I bought Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for the PSP. This is a remake of the original Tactics because, as some of you may know, my ex-girlfriend has my original PS1 copy. I haven't researched anything on this game, but at the time I figured "How can they fuck this game up? It's one of the best games of all time, and certainly the best Final Fantasy ever."

I have now broken my record as to how fast I have returned a game to Gamestop which was previously 3 hours 15 minutes on not getting both discs of Star Ocean 3. My time for returning FFT is at 1 hour and 27 minutes because it is so terrible.

Dear Square-Enix,

If you don't want to piss off your customers, try having someone other than a glue sniffing, retarded chimp code your games.

I mean my god is it awful. The whole thing moves at approximately two-thirds the speed (my memory may be hazy, but this is definitely slower, although I don't know exactly how much), and worse, every single special animation, and I mean EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ONE, including using a goddamn POTION, causes the game's frame rate to drop into the single digits.

The worst part is, while the gameplay is half-assed, the artistic side was given 110% all around. The new cutscenes are gorgeous, and look like the concept art brought to life, with pencil hatch lines and everything. The voice acting is pretty good too, and the music is very faithful since what was not directly ported was arranged only slightly and keeps the same feel. Another great thing is that the entire game's script, from dialogue to job skill names, was rewritten in a modified "Ye Olde English" style, and it's clear enough to understand, whilst adding just enough regional influence to really draw you in.

If only using Fire 1 didn't turn the game into a slideshow. Seriously, that's just inexcusable Square. Just because Tactics was the first game of yours not to have shit coding doesn't mean you have to be jealous of the Ogre Battle guys that coded it for you and fuck it up.

I vaguely remember arguing with you about this a long while back, but since I've never actually played the game, it's safe to assume you won.

e:by game I mean this port.

I actually really enjoyed this game on the PSP, and never experienced the slowdowns that NN describes. In fact, I wish that they would release this on the PSN so I could download if for my PSP Go.

How could you not notice?

The one on the left is emulating the original Tactics at full speed, and the other two are running the English and Japanese WotL, respectively.

It might not look too bad, but keep in mind that it does that for every single action in the game, and the sound effects don't lag with it, so you get this big annoying de-sync.

The worst part about it is that it isn't due to hardware specs, it's due to a terrible job coding.

Square, next time you hire monkeys to fling poo, don't also have them port your games for you.

Well if you rip from UMD and mess with the clock speed it is perfectly fine >_>

No it isn't, I ripped it just to see if it would help, and my clock speed was maxed out. The differences were nonexistent.

I am going to call bullshit on the non-existent difference. Taking FFT from Disk to drive will reduce lag. The clockspeed... that is a whole 'nother issue.

It also depends one what model of PSP you are playing on as the hardware has changed as well as the CF you are running with it.

You know, it might not be bullshit if the coding sucks that fucking bad.

Anyways, none of this matters since I just went and emulated the PS1 version on my PSP. Guess what? It has no lag problems what-so-ever. Now that's some sad shit.

As has been stated a billion times by people who know way more about this stuff than I do, it's an emulation problem that the developers caused when they ported the game. You can't fix it by adjusting your clock speed or whatever. It might help reduce the UMD lag, sure, but it won't do dick to the emulation.

Yeah I double checked with my CF PSP using an ISO of FFT, and there was definitely a noticable change. The emulation still sucked but the time it took to load was reduced by about half. Clock speed won't change anything unless its reading from UMD.

I'm not talking about the loading, the loading was bearable. I'm talking about the freaking lag. Trust me dude, the disc doesn't even spin too much during battles, meaning it's not loading those attacks, it just can't play them.
