As many are aware, most of you here are like six years old and mentally stunted to boot. So, you probably don't remember the classic educational game for the Apple II (and later Mac), The Oregon Trail.

Wikipedia says:

Quote

The original version of The Oregon Trail was created in 1971 by three student teachers at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, using a mainframe computer. One of these students, senior Don Rawitsch, had the idea to create a computer program for a history class he was teaching, and recruited two of his friends, Paul Dillenberger and Bill Heinemann, both of whom were students teaching math, to help him. In 1974 Rawitsch took a job at Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, or MECC, a state-funded organization that developed educational software for the classroom. He uploaded his game into the organization's network where it could be accessed by schools across Minnesota.

The game was inspired by the real-life Oregon Trail and was designed to teach school children about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the trail. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley by way of the Oregon Trail via a Conestoga wagon in 1848.

If you are a 20-something person who attended an elementary school that could afford a couple of computers, odds are you played this game. Odds are also good that you never beat this game because you kept fucking dying of dysentery and you didn't understand why spending all your money on ammo was not working out. I myself never made it to Willamette Valley in my youth, but I never gave up hope that one day I could do it. With your help, I will valiantly lead the Sonic Online staff through the many twists and turns of the American West, and, provided you guys aren't retarded, to victory at last. Many will die along the way I'm sure, but it's all worth it if at least I make it.

I've already taken the liberty of setting things up just so we can get right into things. I decided to be a carpenter because that's the middle difficulty basically, and I entered all the party member names.

It's time for our first choice to be made as a team. Do we want to leave in: 1. March, 2. April, 3. May, 4. June, 5. July, or 6. Ask for advice?

Vote for your choice by posting a number below. I will tally the results and go with the majority opinion, so be sure to vote early and vote often! I plan to eventually have this timed to a routine, like every 12 hours or something, but for the first few I'm just gonna wing it, so don't put off voting or you may not make it.

Here we go...
What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know.

Hey, a Let's Play topic! This might be a good time to resurrect my topic, but I doubt anything's changed since it died...

Anyway, I'm probably gonna have to go with 2 as well. I don't know shit about the starting and chosen destinations nor the distance between eachother, but I do know that it's still going to be cold in March and it's going to begin getting pretty hot in May and will be in June and July. April seems like it'd be the best month to go traveling anywhere.

I also have to say 2. This is pretty sweet. I loved this game as a kid. And yeah, I always died of fucking dysentery.

Also, I wonder what a fusion of me and MoA would post like...

I never had the original version. I had Oregon Trail 2, which was basically the same thing, just updated, and on Windows.

I always died of scurvy, some kind of fever from a wild fruit in my attempt to stave off scurvy, or an Indian attack. Which was fucking bullshit by the way, because when you've got bear meat as your main source of food, and 30 something other wagons of people, you shouldn't be falling to Indians in that game. It was all random chance, which is bullshit.

I vote 5. July. It may be a bit warm out, but I'd rather get a little sweaty than risk being attacked by the cold-loving wild yetis that were so common across the Midwest back in the 1800s.

Oh yeah, I've seen a version of this at my school. It was a Canadian truck driving version instead. I kept eating too much fast food and having heart attacks. But for fuck's sake, it's the only food you can get cheaply.

Alright, well, I think that's enough time for a response. 2/April wins.

Alright, this next part is tricky to do with a vote, and I don't want to split it up into a bunch of different votes. I will say that it's recommended by the game that we get at least 2 yoke of oxen (that's four individual oxen), 200 lbs. of food per person, and two sets of clothing per person. I'm thinking more like 3 yoke, 1250 lbs. of food total (250 per person), 2 sets of clothing and then buying more later if needed (thieves like to steal that shit), 50 bullets for hunting, and two or three extra parts per type. So, I guess what I'll look for next is the best rationale for what should be purchased if anyone disagrees.

I don't really see a flaw in that plan, so I agree with Sway.

As I said, I've only played the second one, so I don't know what the rates at which shit happens to you in this game. That seems a little low on spare parts for the second one, but if you guys don't see a flaw in it the rate at which they break is probably lower here. So I'm going to put faith in your judgment.

Other than that, everything else looks like it would be fine in the second, so I've got no complaints here.

Wait, we need oxen? We just can't strap MoA and Kvinte to the wagon and dangle a carrot on a stick in front of them? Also, I propose we play by Donner party rules. We buy no food, and we just eat dead people from graves we find along the way.

but in all seriousness, I'd buy one each of the wagon parts, as if one of those breaks, you're sitting around for a while trying to trade for it. Total suckage.

We don't have MoA and Kvitne. We have MoAKvitne, and he's only one person.

Even Goku and Vegeta/Goten and Trunks had a more creative name than that.

Ugh, can you just kick Shmeckie and give either me or Kvitne his spot? You know Shmeckie is just going to bitch the entire trip. Also, he has the bladder of a toddler, so enjoy having to halt the wagon for a pee break every 15 minutes.

As for the supply purchasing plan, I say we sink at least $650 worth into ammo, buy ourselves one really sturdy ox to pull us, then spend the rest on food. Spare parts are for the kinds of idiots who get suckered into that extended warranty bullshit, and we can always make our own clothes out of the animals and native people we kill along the way.

This game is too old to have good options like that. If only there was Fallout: Oregon Trail, your strategy would work, MoA. And Shmeckie will probably die quick, don't worry!

So I bought 4 yoke of oxen, 2 sets of clothes per person, 250 lbs. of food per person, 60 bullets, and 3 spare parts per.

3. Look at map. Despite having lived in the Northwestern United States for most of my life, I don't remember ever looking at a map of the area, so I'd like to get an idea of what the geography we're going to be traversing is like. Also, maybe get a peek at where the entrances to the dungeons and raid zones are located.

In all seriousness I'll say we go with 3, like MoA says. But for my joke of the post, I say we need to go with number 6 unless you want Shmeckie peeing in the corner of the wagon.
