So, yeah. Oscars were on tonight. Thought I'd get some discussion rolling on the awards that were dished out.

I'm glad that Slumdog Millionaire got the nod for Best Movie. It really was by far the best movie of last year. Don't get me wrong, TDK was a close second, but Slumdog was just amazing. I also approve of the sound awards given to the movie for the score and song. The film really had an amazing soundtrack.

I'm also happy that Heath Ledger got the award for Best Supporting Actor. His Joker was the best role of his career and he really deserves it.

That's all I'm really gonna talk about for now. Sway knows much more about movies in general than I do, so I'm sure he'll have a lot more to say.

I might write more tomorrow if anyone brings up something interesting, but for now I just wanted to say that I think Slumdog Millionaire was quite good, but more of a B+ than an A. It was a good movie during a very weak year. My first choice would have been TDK just for the sheer heart-pounding experience of it, but out of the usual Oscar-type movies, my favorite was The Wrestler. I realize I'm in the minority on that one (although it should have been a contender over The Reader), and so Slumdog Millionaire was definitely a good choice this year -- I just don't agree.

I also think Mickey Rourke should have won Best Actor, but I do suppose it takes a lot of acting talent to make out with a dude if you're straight, so there you go Sean Penn.

Slumdog deserved Best Score, Directing, and Editing, but TDK should've taken best cinematography IMO. Some of those shots were incredible and I didn't really see anything that wowed me in Slumdog. Cinema verite and natural lighting doesn't impress me much anymore.

In the Foreign Language Film category, I haven't seen Departures, but Waltz With Bashir was only okay anyway. I wouldn't see it again.
What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know.

Bashir was only okay? Aww, I was hoping it would be better. Oh well, maybe I'll check out Departures as well now.

I agree with the cinematography sentiments. The entire scope of TDK was amazing and deserved more praise. The fact that it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture makes me pissed at the Academy. Just because it's an action movie doesn't mean that it shouldn't even be considered. But that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

I haven't seen The Wrestler simply because I'm not that interested in wrestling. Still, I respect your opinions on movies and you've never steered me wrong before, so would you still recommend it Sway?

Yes. I don't like wrestling, either. While the wrestling scenes are actually very brutal and engaging, The Wrestler is not about wrestling. It's a character study of a broken, self-destructive man following his dream further than it's supposed to go. It's moving, intense, sometimes light enough to be funny and has wonderful pacing and a fantastic ending.

You feel like you're getting an insight into The Ram's life as a solid, believable, flawed but sympathetic, tragic hero. If you have any interest in what dreams mean to people, and what dreams can cost people, I'd recommend you see it. Also, it's from Darren Aronofsky of The Fountain fame, and I recall you liking that movie.

Wow. Yeah, I liked The Fountain. This sounds like it's right down my alley actually. I'll be watching it soon then. Thanks.
