DISCLAIMER: Sonic the Hedgehog and related characters belong to Sega/the Sonic Team. I created the other characters, scenarios, and places solely for the purpose of this story (and my characters were hounding me to write this, but that's a different topic I don't want to get into right now. Already this disclaimer is longer than it needs to be).
Chapter one: Survivor
"We've found a live one!"
Tikal whipped around, her blue eyes sparkling with hope. "You're sure they're alive?" she asked anxiously. Finally, a survivor!
"Yep," said one of the search party. "She's in pretty good condition, too. Hardly a scratch."
"Well, bring her here. We'll take care of her as best we can." The only one to survive that horrible volcantic eruption... Tikal thought miserably, How depressing.
Two pink echidnas appeared, carrying what looked like a lump of red fur. They laid it down gently, and it grunted. 'It' was actually what seemed to be a hedgehog with such bright crimson quills she looked like she'd carried some of the volcano with her. There were no signs of burns or other fire injuries on her, which was odd, to say the least. Tikal remembered the other, what was it, four who had survived the recent disasters. Not a mark on them, either...
"She was delirious when we found her," one of the echidnas interrupted Tikal's thoughts. "Could barely stay awake, poor thing. She was complaining about it being cold— Ah, she's coming around again..."
Sure enough, the hedgehog groaned and turned over. She muttered something, then opened her eyes, blinking in the light. Tikal dropped to her knees. "Are you alright?" she inquired. "Do you need anything? Food? Water? Just say what it is."
The girl stared at the echidna worrying over her, her yellow eyes burning a hole through her. After a long moment, the hedgehog hurmphed.
"Back up, chicka, I need room to breathe. One question at a time, in the future, 'kay? My brain's not working too fast right now. The trauma, ya know? Very, eh, traumatic." Tikal back up a little, surprised. If this girl is so traumatized, how is it that she's so... alive?
"What's your name?" the echidna heard herself say.
"Retna." she yawned and sat up. "Got a problem with that?
"You mean ...like the volcano?" Retna cocked her head, thinking.
"Yeah," she replied at last. "People are named after their mothers all the time, right?"
