In the summer of 2006, I began writing this Sonic fanfic, finishing it a few months later. It involves using the seven deadly sins: gluttony, envy, wrath, greed, sloth, lust, and pride, in comparison with the seven Chaos Emeralds. I personally believe that my writing has gotten much better since when I originally wrote this story, but I hope you'll all enjoy it nonetheless.

I'll start off posting a few chapters over the course of the day, and if some of you enjoy it, I'll continue posting the rest.

Chapter 1: Fusion of Light and Shadow

It was a dark night, the crescent moon shining overhead dimly, small clouds obscuring the stars. Alarms were sounding, sirens were wailing as activity stirred at Eggman’s base. The maniacal doctor was in a room somewhere in the large misshapen base. He had locked himself in a room no larger than a standard high school gymnasium. The walls were plastered with technological computer devices and monitors. In the center of the room was a large mechanical pillar. Circling the pillar was seven clear chambers, six of them containing gems that glowed ever so brightly. A flashing red light stood above a monitor on the eastern wall.

“That meddlesome hedgehog always ruins my plans,” the doctor cackled in an evil tone. “Well, let him come. I think he’ll find he’s a bit out of his league with this one.”

With that, the large, round man held out a blue diamond-shaped emerald and placed it in the unoccupied chamber. Upon being placed inside, it too began to shine. No sooner than the task had been completed, a large metallic door was unhinged and slammed into the wall at the opposite end by some force. Emerging from the entrance was a blue hedgehog that walked on two legs, wore red specially designed shoes with a white stripe across the top, and white gloves. He was about 3 feet tall, had green eyes, and the muzzle, arms, and chest section of his fur had a human tone to it.

He stared at the bald-headed man with a frizzy mustache that was at least ¾ of a foot in length. The man wore a red long-sleeved jacked, a white zipper and stripe down both arms positioned on it, along with four golden buttons and several white dots. His pants were long, black-colored with shoes to match. Other noticeable features were his white gloves and round blue glasses that prevented the ability to see his eyes.

“All right, Eggman, this ends now!” the hedgehog shouted.

“Really now, Sonic,” Eggman replied. “How can it end if you don’t even know what I’m planning?”

“I know plenty,” Sonic assured. “The fact that you are trying to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds to use your new weapon to force the capital cities of the planet into surrender is more than enough information!”

The doctor couldn’t help but give a chuckle at the hedgehog’s summary of his plans.

“Sonic, Sonic, Sonic,” Eggman said, shaking his head back and forth in a disappointed manner. “You don’t even know the half of it.”

“Big deal! What are you going to do, explain it to me?” Sonic replied jokingly.

“As a matter of fact, I think I will,” Eggman informed. Sonic couldn’t help but want to hear what plan the doctor had come up with, causing him to relax a bit. Finally the doctor began his explanation. “As you are well aware, there are two types of energy that reside within the Chaos Emeralds. One of which is the positive energy, or the energy you use when you transform into ‘Super’ Sonic or use Chaos Control. The other is the negative energy, or the energy used for all other purposes. Now, these two energies, although they exist together, cannot be used at the exact same moment in time. The power would be unstable. It’s like light and shadow, both cancel the other out, exist together. Yet, they cannot be combined.”

“I understand that, but what does all of this have to with your plan?” Sonic wondered.

“Use your head, dear lad! If these two energies could be combined the power would be greater than anything this world has ever seen. Imagine your ‘super’ form, but with ten times the amount of power!” Eggman explained.

Sonic closed his eyes and gave a small snicker. Eggman was curious at Sonic’s actions, surely he had realized the plan.

“So, you’ve figured out a way to combine these energies then?” Sonic questioned.

“Yes, and it’s quite stable,” Eggman answered, sounding quite confident with his work.

“If you were to ask me,” Sonic replied, still snickering. “I’d say you can’t contain that amount of power and energy to control properly.”

“Well then, my cocky little friend… Let’s find out if you’re right!” Eggman exclaimed, pressing the button on a nearby computer panel.

Sonic watched as the emeralds began to glow even brighter as light traveled up the pillar. Surely Eggman had a robot hiding in the corner to attack if he tried to intervene, but he could handle it. Still, Sonic couldn’t help but suddenly begin to shake violently.

“I’m positive that Eggman can’t control that amount of power, knowing how hard it is for me to control my power as Super Sonic,” Sonic told himself. Sonic continued to watch the machine, focussing more on the emeralds themselves. “So, why do I feel so uneasy about this?”

“Energy at 60% and increasing smoothly,” boasted Eggman triumphantly. It was then that Sonic noticed something odd about the Chaos Emeralds. The two energies were mixing, perfectly in fact, but the emeralds were starting to crack.

“No!” Sonic gasped. “I was wrong! It’s not the container for the energy that’s not big enough, it’s the emeralds! They aren’t used to this kind of strain!”

Eggman didn’t seem to notice. The energy was already at 90% and climbing fast with every second.

“Eggman, you fool! Stop now!” Sonic cried out.

“Too late for that!” laughed Eggman.

“That’s not what I mean! The emeralds, they…!” Sonic shouted, his voice being cut off by the cannon above the building preparing to fire at the city nearly 50 miles in the distance.

Eggman finally realized something was wrong, seeing the emeralds crack. He quickly hit the “Abort” button located next to the ignition button, but it was too late. The cannon was just about to fire, but the emeralds themselves gave way, releasing an aura of energy that knocked both Sonic and Eggman against the wall. The cannon collapsed on itself, resulting in an explosion that sent both of them flying in opposite directions, destroying the base in the process.

Sonic’s body fell among the rubble of scattered machine and building parts, his belly towards the ground. He was covered in bruises, body aching all over. He looked in front of him as he saw the seven Chaos Emeralds once again rise into the air, as they usually did, to scatter. This time, however, something different happened.

Upon reaching the point in the sky, Sonic swore he saw the emeralds shatter into thousands of pieces. Yet, the shape of the emeralds remained, and no glass fell to the ground. Sonic observed the scene as seven black lights scattered across the land, filling Sonic with dread.

“What is this feeling?” he asked himself, shaking as if he had been put in the middle of a snowstorm. “I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about all of this.”

Sonic’s vision went blurry as he reached out to try and push himself up. Why had he been so stupid as to not try and stop Eggman when he had the chance? All went black and soon faded as he toppled over, his eyes closed and body completely worn out. Everything in the world was calm as it should be, yet Sonic still felt completely uneasy about everything. Something was wrong, or would be wrong in the near future, and it would be his fault.

Chapter 2: Going Alone

Sonic’s eyes twitched as he slowly opened them. The sun was directly above him, glaring down its bright rays. White fluffy clouds could be seen in various places in the ocean blue sky. The sound of birds chirping, or rather flickies as they were known on Sonic‘s world, filled the air. Sonic sat up and viewed the damage scene from the previous night.

“How long was I out for?” he wondered, rubbing his eyes with his arm. “Wait, now I remember!”

Sonic recalled the events of the night before, remembering the black Chaos Emeralds. He jumped to his feet and dashed off. He realized that he forgot about Eggman, but he was long gone by now. Running through several forests and smaller towns along the way, he finally stopped at a high cliff. He looked to his right and gazed at the sapphire-blue ocean, feeling the breeze flow though his fur for just a moment. He then turned his head ahead of him and looked up.

There was a small set of stairs lined in a wall leading up to a slightly higher part of the cliff. Perched on top was a small warehouse, the walls were a type of metal, and there were a couple small square windows. Though the building seemed small for a warehouse, it was actually much larger as it went down into the cliff, having a very large basement. Outside of the building was a long paved runway, several palm trees perfectly aligned on each side. With no further thought, Sonic ran up the stairs.

Directly outside the building, Sonic caught his breath in about a second and knocked on the door. He heard no answer and knocked again. Still hearing no answer, he slowly opened the door. Inside were several tools, and a large wooden table with what appeared to be blueprints on them. He took a quick look around and proceeded to the door just on the other side of the building. He approached the small metallic door and opened it. Sonic noticed a large stairwell leading down, and headed downwards.

Upon reaching the bottom, Sonic caught sight of exactly how big the lower level really was. It led from under the small building all the way under the runway. In the direct center was a large aircraft that resembled an old airplane, most of it blue with small patches of orange on the edges of the wings. Near the tail was an emblem that looked like two orange and white fox tails. Sonic looked around and saw the one who made it, a fox who was almost half a foot small than he was.

The fox also stood on his hind legs, wearing the same gloves and shoes as Sonic. His shoes, however, were white on the front half and red on the back. His appearance contained orange fur, with white patches on the chest and muzzle region. He also had three orange strands of hair stick out over his forehead. However, the most surprising feature was that he had not one, but two tails trailing behind him, orange with white tips. He appeared very busy, diligently working on whatever he was making. He was sitting on a stool over a large workbench.

“Hey, Tails!” Sonic called out, trying to get the fox’s attention as he walked over.

Sonic had called the fox Tails, a nickname given to him due to his two tails, but his real name was Miles Prower. Truth be told, he really didn’t like his name too much, and preferred his nickname. Still, he didn’t show any signs of disapproval when somebody called him by it.

“Hey Sonic, didn’t hear you come in,” Tails replied. Tails was adjusting what appeared to a mechanical version of Sonic’s shoes with a screwdriver. “What brings you here?”

“I was wondering; do you still have that Chaos Emerald Locator Watch?” asked Sonic. “I really need it.”

“Yeah, it’s right here,” Tails answered, straying from his work. He reached to his left and pulled up an ordinary-looking square watch and handed it to Sonic. “What do you need it for?”

“Well, I can’t really answer that,” Sonic admitted, remembering the events from last night. “All I know is, something is wrong with them, and I need to find them fast!”

“I can help you look for them!” Tails said, offering to help the hedgehog.

“Sorry buddy, but I need you to stay here,” Sonic apologized, strapping the watch onto his left wrist.

“But why?” Tails asked, his tone showing that he was slightly disappointed with Sonic’s reply.

“Listen Tails, I don’t know what it is I’m up against,” Sonic answered. “And the truth is… I’m afraid. I don’t even know I can handle whatever’s coming.”

Sonic placed both of his hands on Tails’ shoulders.

“So that’s why I need you to stay! If I fail I need you to pick up where I leave off. And I need you to stay and protect everyone here! Do you understand?”

Tails nodded his head.

“Thank you, buddy!” Sonic said, turning to leave.

“Wait, Sonic!” Tails called, getting out of the chair and running towards Sonic, gripping his invention tightly. “Before you go, I wanted to know if you c…”

“I’m sorry, Tails, but I really have to go!” Sonic interrupted, running up the stairs and leaving behind Tails.

“Good luck then…” Tails said in a low voice, turning around.

Tails’ head was facing towards the ground, obviously depressed. He slowly sat himself back upon the stool and placed his invention on the table. He slammed his head down on the desk. Next to his body lay a blue sheet of paper, blueprints with the title “Jet Shoes”.

“I was really hoping you could try them so you could use them next you went off,” Tails said to himself. “That’s why I spent the past four nights straight working on them. These would allow you to be able to fly just like me, and then you wouldn’t have to worry about the range of attack when fighting over a large body of water. The sky would be the limit.”

Though Tails acted fairly mature for his age, it didn’t change the fact that he was still a child, no more than 8 years old. Using his two tails, he had the ability to fly by twirling them like a propeller. Still, he wasn’t that fast and couldn’t fly for too long, so he invented the Tornado so he could fly vast distances at top speed. Since Sonic lacked the ability to swim, Sonic would usually ride atop the plane and attack from there if need be. Unfortunately, he was limited to such a small range, so he invented the Jet Shoes so Sonic could battle in the air. He sat up and continued working on them, using the extra time to ensure that they worked perfectly.

Meanwhile, Sonic was long gone and was now heading through a forest not too far off in the distance, though it was at least twenty miles away. Unbeknownst to him, an ominous black shadow slowly approached vicinity of Tails. The shadow was only a few feet away from the runway. Whatever it was, it was not something that could be identified, the only actual identifiable part being a jewel-shaped mark deep inside.

Thanks. I was 17 when I wrote it.

Chapter 3: From the Emeralds

After running through the forest, over a wide flat terrain of plains, and into another forest at the base of a mountain, Sonic got the distinct feeling that he was close to his goal.

“I guess now’s as good a time as ever,” he told himself, looking at the locater watch. “Nothing yet, I better increase the magnification.”

The watch had two small round buttons on the right edge of it, and two more on the left. The screen on the center displayed a sort of radar, only there was no white line constantly circling it. Sonic pushed the button on the upper right, causing it to zoom in. It was then that Sonic noticed a very thin white light circle on the map in the lower right.

“I think I’ve got one!” he said, excitedly. “However, something’s not right. Normally the signal is much clearer, and it’s outlined by the color of the emerald. I was right, something did happen to them last night!”

Sonic’s train of thought was soon interrupted. The signal was moving, coming right at him, and fast. Though it was coming from the southeast, Sonic began looking left and right frantically.

“Wait, which way am I facing?” he panicked.

Sonic felt a dark presence approaching him, yet he could determine from which direction it was coming from. It was that a loud noise caught his attention.

“LOOK OUT!!!” a voice cried.

Sonic looked to his right and saw something coming towards him. Before he could make out what it was, the figure tackled him and pushed him to the ground. A shadow in the ground darted past him with incredible speed. The figure got up and heaved a sigh of relief.

“That was close! Are you alright?” the figure asked, obviously a male from its voice.

Sonic sat up and looked up at the character. The sunlight over head illuminated the character, revealing it to be a silver dragon. The dragon was rather small for one, no more than 5 feet tall. It was a western-type dragon, standing on its muscular legs, with wings the size of its body on its back. The dragon had silver scales all over its body, the stomach and chest region slightly lighter. The arms looked just as muscular as the legs, with long sharp claws at the fingertips. The dragon held out a hand to help Sonic up.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Sonic replied. However, a different thought was going through Sonic’s mind, “He’s a dragon? I thought the dragon race died out over 300 years ago.”

The dragon quickly shifted his eyes in the direction of where the shadow had fled.

“It’s coming back!” he warned.

The shadow quickly darted at the two, forcing them both to step out of the way.

“What is it?” Sonic asked. “That thing I mean?”

“Gluttony!” the dragon answered.

“Gluttony?” Sonic questioned, repeating the dragon’s words.

“He’s one of seven deadly beings I sealed inside the Chaos Emeralds!” the dragon replied. “The fact that I’m here proves that the seal has been broken!”

The shadow darted at them again; once again they jumped out of the way.

“I still don’t understand!” Sonic exclaimed.

“I’ll explain later!” the dragon shouted.

As the shadow whipped past them again, the dragon held out right arm, holding it with his left hand.

“Enough of this!” he said angrily. “Chaos Containment Field!”

Immediately, the shadow became enclosed in a yellow bubble, much like a barrier. The shadow emerged from the ground, revealing its true form to be a giant blob.

“Is that…?” Sonic began to ask.

“Yes,” the dragon interrupted. “That’s what Gluttony really looks like!”

The blob began ramming up against walls of the bubble.

“It’s useless, you can’t escape!” the dragon cackled. Just as he said that, the bubble shattered, causing him to gasp in disbelief. “No way!”

Part of the blob that was Gluttony opened up, the hole seeming to be a mouth. As it approached Sonic, Sonic saw something in the back of its throat. It was the outline of a Chaos Emerald. The dragon charged at Sonic and pushed him away.

“It’s after you!” the dragon gasped.

“It’s after me?” Sonic wondered. “Why?”

“Gluttony isn’t like the others,” the dragon answered. “He only eats, and eats anything he sees as nourishment. He’s the weakest out of all seven of them. Yet, for some reason, I couldn’t hold him in my containment field. I must’ve lost most of my power when I sealed them away last time! Still, it’s highly unlike him to target one sole being. You must be strong!”

Sonic jumped into a nearby tree as Gluttony came at him again. His effort was futile though, as Gluttony simply devoured the tree trunk, causing the whole tree to fall. Sonic jumped safely back to the ground as the falling tree made a loud crash.

“So how do we beat this thing?!” Sonic shouted.

“You can’t beat him,” the dragon replied. “Even he is too powerful for that. Many sacrificed their lives just to allow me to seal them away, along with myself, but now I can’t even hold him back.”

“Maybe,” Sonic responded. “But, you didn’t have me or my friends to help you back then. I think I know of a way to beat him, but I’m going to need your help!”

Chapter 4: Purified Emerald

“You have a plan?” the dragon wondered.

“Yes,” Sonic answered. “Can you do that containment thing again?”

“Yeah,” the dragon replied. “But I can only hold him for a couple seconds.”

“That’s more than enough time,” Sonic said. “Just wait for my signal!”

The dragon nodded his head and Sonic took a position to confront Gluttony. The blob charged at him, Sonic easily dodging him with his unbelievable speed.

“This guy’s fast!” the dragon observed. “Very fast!”

The blob charged into the tree behind Sonic, once again eating through the trunk. The tree began to fall in Sonic’s direction, but Sonic didn’t move. Rather, he let the tree fall on top of him, but only the section of branches near the top, the section covered in round green leaves. When the section fell on him, Sonic struggled to move, or at least made it seem that way.

“Oh no!” the dragon cried, dashing off to help Sonic.

“Stay back!” Sonic ordered, his look telling the dragon to trust him.

The dragon froze in place and stared at the hedgehog, wondering what Sonic could possibly have in mind. Gluttony saw the opportunity and lunged at Sonic, his mouth opening wider and wider with every inch.

“That’s it…come get me!” Sonic thought, giving a smirk. As soon as Gluttony’s mouth was open wide enough for Sonic to see the outline of the Chaos Emerald, Sonic gave the signal, shouting, “Now!”

“All right!” the dragon shouted, holding out his right arm and grabbing it with his left hand. “Chaos Containment Field!”

Gluttony once again became trapped in the barrier like before. However, this time he remained frozen in place, unable to move. Still, the dragon could feel his energy draining and the barrier would soon crack. Sonic gave a wide grin.

“So, you want to eat me, huh?” he cackled. “Well, I’m about to give you the snack of your lifetime!”

Sonic curled up into a ball and began rapidly spinning in place, the force of the spin easily throwing off the branches trapping him.

“What’s he doing?” the dragon wondered, feeling his strength continue to drain. The moment the dragon felt his power over Gluttony give way, Sonic took off. The dragon shouted out to him, “Wait!”

It was too late for the dragon’s warning, as Sonic was already charging at Gluttony. The barrier containing the blob broke, his mouth was wide open. Sonic entered the mouth, only to have it close around him. The blob was happy with its rather willing meal.

“No!” the dragon gasped in disbelief.

Just then, Gluttony’s smile turned to a look of confusion as something stirred inside of him. His body randomly bulged out at places, signifying that something was moving about inside of him. The blob suddenly seemed to burst as a blue light emerged from the back of the throat, precisely where the emerald outline had been. Sonic landed on the ground behind where the blob had been, his body covered in black goop.

Sonic coughed a bit, having had trouble breathing inside of the monstrous blob. He was on one knee and finally stood up. He turned to where the blob once known as Gluttony had been, only to find nothing there.

“I can’t believe it!” the dragon called, flying over to the hedgehog. You did it! You actually did what I thought was impossible!”

“I’m sure if I had fought him when you last did,” Sonic replied, still coughing a bit, “I wouldn’t have been able to do it. I don’t think your powers were the only ones to weaken over time.”

Both began laughing a bit, only to be interrupted by a glowing blue light. The two looked where Gluttony had been previously, and found the light emanating from a black goop that belonged to the blob. The two walked over to it. Sonic reached out to grab, carefully wiping away the black muck. After cleaning it off, Sonic realized that he was holding a Chaos Emerald, the jewel shining brighter than ever before. In fact, it was so bright that it nearly blinded Sonic at first.

“The emerald,” the dragon stuttered, “it’s been purified!”

“Purified?” Sonic questioned.

“Yes,” the dragon answered. “As you already know, he emerald contained both positive and negative energy. Now that the evil that inhabited the emerald is gone, it’s filled with nothing but positive energy.”

Sonic looked on with both amazement and wonder at the emerald he was now holding. He looked at his locator watch, only to find the signal coming in clearer than it ever had been. After gawking at the sight for a while, Sonic tucked the emerald away.

“Say, I never got your name,” Sonic said, remembering that neither of them had introduced themselves.

“It’s Draon,” the dragon told him. “Draon Pire! And you are?”

“Sonic,” Sonic replied. “Sonic the Hedgehog!”

“Nice to meet you, Sonic!” Draon said. “Looks like we’ve got some tough work ahead of us.”

“Yeah…” Sonic sighed, knowing that he and Draon both need each other’s help.

“However, if you’re going to tag along, I should at least give you some information,” Draon told Sonic. He began explaining to Sonic about the seven deadly beings. “Along with Gluttony, there are six other beings out there we need to stop. Of the six, there are three that we need to be even more cautious around. They are Envy, Pride, and Wrath. Each one of them has a sort of subordinate, or the other three beings. Lust strongly supports Envy, Sloth helps out Wrath, and Greed helps out Pride. So, we need to take out the subordinates before we’re ready to engage them. Envy and Wrath are both extremely powerful and dangerous, but their power doesn’t even come close to Pride’s. The good news is Pride takes his precious time planning out his next moves, while Envy and Wrath both try to obtain more power to surpass him. Therefore, that gives us time to defeat the others before he’ll step in.”

“But what if he does show up and helps them out?” Sonic asked.

“He won’t,” Draon assured. “Last time I fought them, Envy and Wrath couldn’t stand him, let alone each other. When I so as much asked Wrath where Envy and Pride were, he nearly blew a gasket. Envy was the same way when I asked about Pride. We won’t have to worry about any of them teaming up.”

Both of them sighed with relief. Sonic heard a very faint beep and looked at his locator watch; a small signal was coming in from the north.

“Looks like another one has shown itself,” Sonic announced. Sonic pointed his finger to a mountain range visible in the north. The mountains were covered in snow. “We'll find it just over those mountains.”

A much larger signal came in next the weaker one.

“I’m detecting the Master Emerald, meaning I was right to assume that Angel Island is where we’re headed,” Sonic stated.

“Figures that place is still around,” Draon said, giving a small chuckle.

“It’s just a shame that your kind isn’t,” Sonic thought. “I wonder if you know that?”

Chapter 5: Tails Gives In

As Sonic and Draon raced towards the mountains between them and Angel Island, Sonic had failed to notice the very small signal coming from the location of Tails’ workshop. There, the young had fox had given his invention made specifically for Sonic some final tweaks. He set his work back down on the workbench and gave a yawn, stretching himself out.

The air grew cold as the fox felt a chill run down his spine. He began shaking violently, feeling a dark presence in the room. He wasn’t alone. It sounded like footsteps were coming from behind him, so he jolted his body around. He was right, standing there was a dark figure he couldn’t make out. However, to him it looked like a young human boy.

“Who are you?!” Tails demanded. “What are you doing here?!”

In an instant, the boy in front of Tails vanished right before his eyes. Tails rubbed his eyes and blinked rapidly, staring at the scene. He sat back and sighed for a moment, hoping he wasn’t going crazy.

“Hi!” a voice called from behind him.

Tails jumped out of his seat, face first, to the ground. Tails lifted himself up and turned around towards the direction of the voice, only to find nothing there.

“There’s no need to be afraid of me, Tails,” the voice told him in an innocent tone, once again behind him. “I only want to help.”

Tails didn’t bother turning around this time, knowing that whoever it was would vanish again.

“H-How do you know my name?” Tails stuttered, showing signs of fear.

“You’re famous, everyone knows it,” the voice replied. “Or at least, everyone should know it. After all, you’re the reason why that bloody hedgehog is so famous.”

Tails felt what seemed like a hand rub against his back, causing him to jump forward and turn around. This time he saw the character. It was a young boy cloaked in black clothes. His skin was slightly darker than that of Eggman’s. His hair was black as well, short with curved spikes in every direction. His eyes were blood red. By his looks, he wasn’t much taller than Tails, and his voice sounded innocent enough.

“What are you talking about?” Tails asked.

The boy began laughing, stepping forward a bit. It was then that Tails noticed that the boy had large dragon-like wings on his back.

“He’s the hero,” the boy said. “But you, you’re the one who helps him figure out how do beat every enemy you face. When was the last time you received any credit alongside him?”

“I receive plenty of credit!” Tails barked. “Once I even saved Station Square from a missile!”

“Yes,” the boy replied. “But that hedgehog did something even greater shortly after, didn’t he? How many people remembered your deed then?”

Tails felt like a dagger had just pierced through his heart, like someone was grabbing it with their bare hands. How could this boy know everything?

“You want to be a hero, don’t you?” the boy asked. “A true hero, like him! He’s your idle, yet he doesn’t treat you the same way, does he?”

“Shut up!” Tails shouted. “He’s my best friend!”

“Why do you think he went off on his own?” the boy replied. “He wants all of the glory for himself! He didn’t even bother to acknowledge that invention you worked so hard for him on.”

It was then that Tails felt as if someone was probing through his mind. He now understood what the boy was doing.

“Shut up!” Tails screamed. “Get out of my head!!!”

Tails grabbed his head in intense pain, bringing his body down to the ground.

“Tails, there are many different kind of heroes in this world,” the boy stated. “I can help you become one of them.”

Tails tried not to listen, but the voice echoed through Tails’ mind. As hard as he tried to prevent it, he could feel the boy intruding through his mind using some kind of magic. Because his eyes were closed, he had failed to notice that the boy’s hand was out. To some it would seem like an offer of help, but the boy’s actions were actually affecting Tails’ own body. Every time the boy moved his hand even the slightest, Tails would react.

“I can help you become a greater hero than Sonic ever dreamed of being!” the boy stated. “In the New World, you’ll be regarded as the greatest hero of all time! That hedgehog will never disrespect you again!”

The boy clenched his fist, and Tails felt something grab hold of his heart and mind. The color in his eyes faded a bit, his body went stiff. Every dark thought that didn’t even represent a fraction of Tails' mind came flooding out. His own soul, his true feelings, was now trapped in a crystal prison in the back of his mind. It tried calling out to his body, but his body wouldn’t listen.

Tails' seemingly soulless body stood up, staring blankly at the boy in front of him. The boy gave a sinister grin, knowing he had won.

“Would you like me to help you?” the boy asked once again.

Tails body nodded its head, despite Tails' spirit telling it not to. The boy smirked.

“Good boy!” the boy cackled.

The boy extended his wings, revealing a jewel-shaped mark between them. He lifted his head up and extended his arms. Tails body felt a pulse run through it as the boy disappeared into thin air. Tails closed his eyes, then opened them again, revealing them to now be the same color of the boy’s.

“Thank you for your help, Tails,” his body said in the boy’s voice. “With your powers combined with my own, we’ll both get what we want! Look out Pride and Wrath, I’ve got the power I now need to defeat both of you. You’ll both listen to me, and I’ll keep my promise to make sure you, Tails, are rightfully rewarded!”

If there were errors, my spell check didn't catch them. >_> And yes, it was jealousy/envy.

Chapter 6: Attack from the Shadows

Sonic and Draon had now arrived in the snowy mountains. The two stood at the entrance to a cave that had been covered by a frozen blue sheet of ice.

“Well,” said Sonic. “Looks like this is your gig.”

“What do you mean?” Draon asked, turning to Sonic.

“You are a dragon, aren’t you?” Sonic questioned. “Can’t you breathe fire or something?”

“Oh,” Draon replied, hesitation present in his voice. “Yeah, right then.”

Draon stood in front of the sheet of ice and opened his mouth. Sonic grew a little impatient when nothing happened.

“Well?” Sonic said.

“Uh…” Draon replied. “It would seem that I’ve been relying so much on my magic that I…uh…well…kind of forgot to breathe fire.”

“You forgot?!” Sonic gasped, his mouth hanging wide open in shock.

“Yep!” Draon answered, scratching the back of his head. He gave a small laugh, but by the tone he was obviously embarrassed.

“Greeeat,” Sonic sighed, obvious hints of sarcasm in his voice. “A dragon who can’t breathe fire, just what we need.”

Draon gave another embarrassed chuckle, and Sonic heaved a deep sigh.

“All right, I’ll take care of this,” Sonic told the dragon. Sonic had a different thought in his mind though, one he didn’t want to speak. “You are the last dragon, so I can’t blame you too much.”

Sonic approached the blockage and went into his powerful Spin Dash mode. His body took the shape of a ball that slammed through the ice with incredible speed and force, shattering it completely. The cave was dark, and the walls of the cave were covered with ice. Small torches that amazingly never went out aligned a couple of the walls deep inside of the cave. Draon took notice of this as he followed the hedgehog deeper and deeper into the cave.

Meanwhile, the being that had possessed Tails’ body stood at the end of the runway, staring out into the blue ocean.

“All these years and the planet still hasn’t changed much,” he said. “It’s peaceful, and now it’s quiet since there aren’t so many pointless wars going on. It makes me want it even more, to make it better, to make it perfect! I can feel Tails’ power greatly increasing my own. It’s a wonder that you never seemed to realize how much power you’re possible of creating, Tails. Don’t worry; I’ll put your body to better use. I’ll show you what you could do if you only knew how to do it.”

Tails’ soul slammed a fist up against the walls of the crystal prison, trying desperately to break free. He could feel himself giving in more and more to the being that now controlled him. He was merely a puppet now, and the only thing capable of cutting the strings was imprisoned deep inside his own body. His body had no free will of its own anymore.

The being closed the eyes of Tails’ body, and then opened them again. He was gaining all of the knowledge Tails possessed.

“I see,” he finally spoke. “Now I know more about that hedgehog I saw in your memories before. Sonic will definitely be an obstacle I have to overcome.”

He went deep into thought, using Tails’ knowledge to come up with a plan of his own. He gave an evil grin.

“No matter,” he cackled, now using Tails’ voice. “I’m sure he’ll be glad to help out his friend.”

He turned and began walking in the direction Sonic had gone. With a simple blink, his eyes became that of Tails’. As he walked along, an emerald-shaped mark had appeared on Tails’ back. He began laughing in Tails’ voice as he disappeared from sight.

Meanwhile, Sonic and Draon had exited the cavern and were now on the other side of the mountain. Now it was just a long walk down, followed by a couple miles of open land, before the beach. The weather was calm, but the high altitude caused Sonic to shiver a bit. Even though Draon was a dragon, he didn’t seem to find it cold like Sonic. The two progress down the path slowly, unaware that something was lurking nearby.

“How can you not be cold? You’re a dragon of all things!” Sonic wondered.

“Heh, my particular clan was a mountain-dwelling race, so I’m used to the cold,” Draon answered. “Of course, the main reason we dwelled in the mountain was because other dragons didn’t like the idea of using magic instead of physical strength. I went after the beings we now seek with twenty others, but only I survived.”

For a moment, Sonic though Draon might start crying. However, he held his head up high and didn’t shed a single tear. Both Sonic and Draon suddenly felt a chill run up their spines.

“Hey, Sonic, do you…?” Draon began to ask.

“Yeah, I feel it too!” Sonic replied, interrupting Draon.

The two continued walking as if they hadn’t noticed anything. The passed by a pine tree, where something seemed to rise out of the shadows. It was a small black creature that resembled a tiny anthropomorphic cat, no more than a foot high. With amazing stealth, it carefully followed the two creatures it was tailing. It lunged at them, only to have Sonic and Draon jump out of the way.

“What is that thing?” Sonic asked.

“It’s a shadow creature,” Draon answered. “It’s a servant of the ones we seek.”

“How come Gluttony didn’t have these things come after us?” Sonic wondered.

“Didn’t I say he wasn’t like others?” Draon replied.

The two lunged at the creature, Sonic kicking it, and Draon clawing it. It disappeared in an instant. Hundreds more jumped out of the shadow all around, surrounding them. Sonic and Draon both looked at each other, both giving a smirk. The looked forwards and cleared a path down the middle, destroying anything that got in the way. Hundreds of creatures that were all kinds of different animals attacked them, but Sonic and Draon disposed of them with little difficulty.

“You guys are just as easy as those scraps of metal Eggman creates!” Sonic exclaimed, punching and kicking away each and every one of them.

Draon turned towards Sonic.

“If this many are after us, then we must be near!” he shouted.

“I just hope Knuckles is okay!” Sonic replied in a worried voice.

“Knuckles…?” Draon questioned. “Is he an echidna? The current guardian of the Master Emerald?”

“Yes, he is,” Sonic confirmed. “He’s devoted to his duties, and I’m worried that if they’re after the Master Emerald, he might lose his cool and do something stupid. He’s a great fighter, more than strong enough to handle these weaklings! However, when he gets angry, he has a tendency to get sloppy.”

“I hope you’re right, Sonic,” Draon said. “He’s going to need to be strong to defeat one of the seven!”

Chapter 7: The Next Enemy

Having made it down the mountainside, Sonic and Draon continued battling against the shadow creatures until they came to the coastline. For some odd reason, none of the creatures appeared on the beach. They walked down the beach. Soon leaving it and walking the side of a cliff. They stood on the cliff and looked out towards the open water. Floating off in the distance was a tiny island, hovering just over the water as if magic held it up.

“There it is, Angel Island!” Sonic said.

“Yeah,” Draon replied. “Looks like it hasn’t changed much since I last saw it.”

“Too bad it’s not the time of the year yet where the island floats closest to the shore,” Sonic sighed. “Yet, it’s also a good thing that it’s not the time when it’s directly over the middle of the ocean.”

Sonic looked down at the water below him.

“So, are we going or what?” Draon asked.

Sonic didn’t answer; he closed his eyes for a second and heaved a sigh.

“It’s times like this I wish I hadn’t asked Tails to stay behind,” he finally said. “At least then we could use the Tornado and fly there.”

“Why not swim?” Draon questioned, looking at Sonic curiously.

“Well,” Sonic replied, giving an slight chuckle. “Let’s just say water and I don’t mix.”

“Can’t swim, can you?” Draon asked.

Sonic just laughed at that.

“I can’t breathe fire, and you can’t swim,” Draon sighed. “We certainly are the perfect hero team, aren’t we?”

Draon approached Sonic and grabbed his arms with his own.

“Here, I’ll fly you over,” he said. “I just hope you aren’t too heavy.”

Draon expanded his wings and carried Sonic over the water. Sonic really wasn’t that heavy, but Draon wasn’t used to carrying things quite as big as Sonic over long distances. Still, he easily managed carrying him the couple miles to the island. Finally reaching it, Draon set Sonic down and relaxed for a moment to catch his breath. In truth, Draon was quite young if you didn’t include the years he was seal away, so the flight was a little more difficult for him.

“All right, I’m ready!” he announced.

The two ran off towards the center of the island. It was then that they got a good look at it. Lush green trees were scattered through, with several flowers of kinds of colors blooming about. The green grass was springy, allowing Sonic and Draon to feel the slightest bit faster. Sonic looked down at his locator watch.

“We’re close!” he observed.

The came to a giant stone alter in the center of the island, stairs leading up to a flat surface and giant stone archway. The stones had moss growing in-between the several cracks that were scattered throughout each one. Small vines were also noticeably trailing up the steps. Sonic and Draon ran up the stairs until the came to the top. In front of the archway was a large green gem hovering above a very tiny hole in the center. It was also the first time seven stone pillars that resembled stone lighthouses could be seen clearly surrounding the altar.

Standing in front of the green emerald was a red echidna that also walked Sonic. He was about 3 ½ feet in height, and wore shoes similar to Sonic’s. He too wore gloves, only they did not outline the fingers, only the thumb was clearly outlined, and two spikes stuck out of the back of the hand. His fur gave him a hairstyle that had the long strands going all the way down to his lower back, above lightning bolt-styled tail. He also had a white patch of fur that looked like a “V” going across the middle of his chest.

“Hey, Knuckles!” Sonic called.

The echidna turned to face the hedgehog and dragon coming towards him.

“Hey, Sonic!” he called back. “What brings you here?”

Sonic and Draon both skid to a stop in front of him. Knuckles took notice of Draon.

“Whoa! A dragon?!” he gasped.

“I’ll explain later,” Sonic replied. “Right now there’s something else we need to be concerned about!”

“What do you mean?” asked Knuckles, acting a bit surprised.

“Something bad is here, and we think it might be after the Master Emerald!” Sonic warned.

“Really?!” Knuckles replied, getting a nod from Sonic. He began punching the air around him. “Thanks for the warning! I’ll clobber anyone that tries to take the Master Emerald from its home! For her sake, it better not be that thieving bat again!”

“I guess you were right about his behavior…” Draon whispered to Sonic, getting a small laugh from him. Draon suddenly noticed that the Master Emerald was glowing a little brighter than usual, as if it were reacting to something. He carefully eyed Knuckles. “Knuckles, was it?”

“Yeah, what’s up?” Knuckles said, wondering what Draon was calling him for.

“I’ve been here before, and I seem to remember that the Master Emerald only glows like that when it senses a Chaos Emerald!” Draon stated.

“That’s correct!” Knuckles confirmed.

“Draon, does that mean that thing’s close?” Sonic asked.

“Yes,” Draon answered, approaching Knuckles. “Closer than we think!”

Draon threw a punch at Knuckles, knocking him backwards a bit. Knuckles got up and rubbed his backside.

“What the hell was that for?!” Knuckles barked.

“Yeah, Draon, what’s gotten into you?!” Sonic gasped.

“Look at your locator watch,” Draon suggested. “Notice anything odd?”

Sonic looked down, he did indeed notice something was odd. The signal was coming directly from Knuckles. Sonic looked at knuckles and noticed something else. Knuckles eyes were now red instead of the usual purple color.

“So, which of the seven are you?” Draon interrogated.

Knuckles began to laugh, it soon turning maniacal. His voice became a little less deep, and it now sounded as if someone who would be a singer was speaking instead of Knuckles.

“How did you know?” the voice asked.

“Ah, now I recognize that voice…Sloth!” Draon stated. “If you must know, that mark on your back is a dead giveaway! I noticed it after I punched you and you rolled backwards. That was when I knew my assumption was right!”

“You seem to know my name, dragon. Tell me, how do you know it?” Sloth wondered.

“I see, you don’t remember?” Draon cackled. “Too bad, it might’ve been what saved your life. Why don’t you tell me where you boss, Wrath, is hiding?”

“I can’t answer that,” Sloth answered. “He only told me to destroy the Master Emerald.”

“So then you possessed that body so you could get near it?” Draon asked.

“He was an easy target,” Sloth laughed. “He was so much like me that it was easy to manipulate his heart.”

“You made a mistake doing that…” Sonic growled, clenching his fists tightly.

“Aw, did I make you angry, Sonic? I took over your friend’s body, didn’t I?” Sloth cackled. “Yes, I know all about the numerous battles you fought together against Eggman and those other foes.”

Sonic disappeared and reappeared in front of Sloth, slamming a fist into his jaw and knocking him back a bit.

“You made a mistake,” said Sonic, “because out of all of the battles I’ve fought with Knuckles, I’ve never lost once!”

Chapter 8: Defeat Sloth!

Sloth stood up, wiping the blood from his lip.

“You’d hit your own friend?” he asked, staring at Sonic with piercing eyes, smirking a bit.

“Like I said,” Sonic replied. “I’ve fought Knuckles before, so I can just treat this as another battle.”

“Careful, Sonic,” Draon warned. “Even though Sloth is possessing him, your actions will hurt Knuckles more than him. You’ll have to force him out of Knuckles’ body; otherwise, you’ll never be able to destroy him.”

“He’s right,” Sloth cackled. “You wouldn’t want to kill your friend now, would you?”

Sloth shrugged his shoulders and lifted his head up, laughing all the while.

“So, how do I force this creep out of Knuckles’ body?” Sonic asked.

“First, you’ll have to weaken him while he’s possessing Knuckles,” Draon explained. “Then, after he’s been weakened, a powerful blow to the mark on his back should force him out. However, make sure you’re careful. If you hit him too hard, the impact will damage his spine, maybe even kill him.”

“All right, sounds simple enough,” Sonic replied, preparing to charge again.

Sloth smiled and lifted up his fist as Sonic approached, slamming it hard into the ground. The ground rose and created a wave of the stone flooring. Sonic quickly jumped high into the air and over it, landing safely on the ground.

“What was that?!” he gasped.

“Oh, did I forget to mention I can use my powers as well as Knuckles’ while I’m in control?” Sloth chuckled.

Sonic took the opportunity and sped towards him, sending a kick to his stomach and knocking him onto the ground outside the altar. Sloth once again stood up, this time having a tiny bit more trouble.

“That was dirty!” he said in a ticked off voice.

“Hey, you shouldn't take the time to gloat while in the middle of a fight,” Sonic replied with a smirk.

Sonic went into his Spin Dash mode and rolled down the side of the altar towards Sloth. Sloth punched the ground and created a ramp, sending Sonic into the air. Using Knuckles’ amazing jumping skills, he leapt into the air and kicked the ball that was Sonic, sending him skidding into the ground. Sonic pushed himself up as Sloth landed, turning to face the echidna.

“Guess you have some moves after all,” he commented.

Sloth smiled and once again punched the ground, creating another wave, this time made of dirt and grass, that headed towards Sonic. Sonic once again jumped it, but when he landed he noticed something was missing. Sloth had disappeared, but Sonic knew better.

“He’s hiding in the trees!” he realized.

A tree came toppling down towards Sonic, but Sonic jumped out of the way. Sonic saw the figure standing from the edge of the trunk and ran at it, slamming a kick into it. Sonic’s face turned to confusion as the figure instantly became nothing but leaves. Sonic gasped in disbelief then realized it must be one of Sloth’s powers, the ability to create doppelgangers from leaves. Sonic saw Draon fly into the air and off in a direction. Figuring that Draon knew where Sloth was, he too ran off in that direction.

Meanwhile, Sloth was already halfway to the edge of the island, running as fast as he could with Knuckles’ body. It didn’t take long at all for Sonic and Draon to catch up. Sonic blocked his path in the front, and Draon landed behind him.

“You were right when you said you two were alike…” Sonic stated. “You’re both slow!”

Sloth took out a leaf he grabbed from a tree and threw it at Sonic. Sonic sidestepped it, causing it to hit a large rock behind him. The leaf sliced through the center of the rock like a bullet fired to pierce.

“I’ve already figured out your powers,” Sonic informed. “There’s no way you’ll catch me off-guard again!”

Sonic once again went into his Spin Dash mode and rolled towards Sloth with incredible speed. Sloth knew he couldn’t dodge, so he prepared to move his hands in front of him and push Sonic back.

“I don’t think so!” Draon exclaimed. “Chaos Containment Field!”

Draon had shrunk the size of the barrier to only contain Sloth’s hands behind his back, preventing him from bringing them forward. Sloth stood there helpless as Sonic slammed his body into him, knocking him into the air. With Sloth’s back to the sky, Sonic leapt into the air and sent a kick to the mark on his back. Two figures crashed into the ground soon after. One was the red echidna, the real Knuckles, the other was something else.

Sonic’s eyes gazed upon Sloth’s true form. Sloth looked like a human, dressed in black clothes similar to the ones boy who possessed Tails wore. However, he was at least 6 feet tall, his arms and legs weighed down by massive muscular arms and legs. On his head he wore what looked like a brown bear’s pelt, The bear’s head covered only the top of the head and over the eyes. He glared at Sonic with red eyes, his pupils looking like they wore on fire. Sonic’s eyes fell upon what looked like large cuffs on his wrists. They both were connected to a broken chain that probably originally held the cuffs together.

“So, that’s what you really look like!” Sonic observed.

Sloth grunted, unwilling to speak to the hedgehog anymore. He swung an arm forwards, the chain acting like a whip that magically extended in length. Though the extension surprised Sonic, he was able to easily avoid it. Sonic closed in on the creature as he continued to swing whips at Sonic. Apparently he wasn’t very bright, and only Knuckles’ intelligence allowed him to think the way he did before. Sonic slammed his body into Sloth’s, knocking him down and backwards.

He used the chains to create a whip to latch onto a tree, using them to pull him over to the tree and back on his feet. Sonic ran at him, but Sloth punched the ground to create a wall. Sonic once again curled into a ball, and instead of going over it, went through the wall, slamming his body into Sloth’s again. However, this time Sloth dispersed into nothing but leaves.

“Darn it, he got away!” Sonic cursed.

“Don’t worry, Sonic,” Draon replied. “He couldn’t have gotten far!”

Sonic looked at Knuckles’ unmoving body. Knowing Sonic wouldn’t leave without making sure his friend was okay, Draon approached the echidna’s body. He put his hand on Knuckles’ back.

“Chaos Rejuvenation!” he said. A small aura surrounded Knuckles, and then disappeared as fast as it had appeared. “Don’t worry, this is a simple healing spell. Luckily, I still have enough magic to do that. He should be fine and wake up in a few minutes. Of course, with the beating you just handed him, he’ll feel like he’s been hit with a tree.”

Sonic gave a small snicker and returned his focus to finding Sloth. The two of them set off, knowing that with his speed he probably hadn’t left the island. They were unaware of how much damage had really put on Sloth’s body.

Sloth could be seen struggling to crawl to the edge of the island. He was in a small gathering of trees, praying he wouldn’t be found until his strength recovered.

“I never knew…that hedgehog would be so tough,” he coughed. “I’ve got…to warn…Wrath!”

Sloth continued crawling through the trees.

“How pathetic!” a voice called from in front of him.

Sloth lifted his head and looked forward, only to find that something was blocking his path. He couldn’t make out the figure, since the sunlight was giving off a glare that limited his sight. A cloud moved in front of the sun, allowing Sloth to see. Standing before him was a two-tailed orange and white fox… Tails!

Chapter 9: Deceiver

“I saw you…in that echidna’s…memories,” Sloth said in a weak voice, coughing some more. “You’re…Tails!”

The fox gave a sinister grin.

“Wrong!” he said in the boy’s voice.

“You!!!” Sloth gasped, sweat starting to drip down his face.

“What a pathetic performance out there, you should be embarrassed!” the fox laughed.

“Next time…I’ll get that hedgehog!” Sloth swore, slamming a fist on the ground.

The fox carefully examined Sloth’s body; it was banged up pretty well.

“You didn’t get all of those wounds from Sonic, did you?” he asked. “Yes, I can see, that echidna put up quite a fight. In fact, you were struggling to keep control of his body the entire time.” His voice once again changed to Tails’ voice. “You can’t even keep control of a body without difficulty!”

“Hey! You…chose a weak…body!” Sloth replied, his voice becoming weaker and weaker by the minute.

“Nonsense,” the fox said in response. “Tails is much harder to control than that little echidna you attempted to possess. His intelligence and will power are outstanding. In fact, in the future there’s no telling how strong he could become. That’s why I did the simple thing and locked his positive feelings away. Even the smallest bit of jealousy can turn into a darkness that will be consuming if used properly. Right now the only thoughts that flow through his mind are dark. He’s my puppet now!”

“I’ll admit it…you’re much stronger…than me,” Sloth said, swallowing his pride. “Please…help me! I’ll do whatever…you say.”

Tails’ face suddenly showed signs of disgust.

“No,” he answered, stepping right up to Sloth’s face. “I was thinking about offering you help if you promised to obey me, but after what you just said, you can forget it! You were given an order, by Wrath no doubt, and you failed. A vassal such as you should be willing to give up their life in order to fulfill their mission. But that’s not what disgusts me… It’s the fact that you just begged me to help you! You’re lucky that Wrath happens to be on the other side of the planet right now, or he’d probably kill you himself for that action.”

Sloth’s face turned to horror as Tails clenched his fist, noticing a very black aura surrounding it.

“Even I would rather serve Pride then have somebody as pathetic as you be my servant!” Tails exclaimed.

Sonic and Draon both turned their heads as they spotted smoke rising to the sky. A small explosion had occurred.

“Sloth!” both thought simultaneously.

The two headed towards the site, coming to an immediate stop as they witnessed scene. A few trees had been knocked down or damaged. A shining green emerald bounced out from the tree in front of them, followed by an injured-looking Tails.

“Tails?” Sonic wondered as he watched the fox fall to the ground in front of him. Sonic shouted out to him. “Tails!”

Sonic and Draon both approached the young fox; his body was covered with bruises. He lay belly down on the grass. He didn’t appear to be bleeding nor have any broken bones, just hurt. Draon examined him closely.

“No mark,” he sighed with relief. “Still, something doesn’t seem right about this.”

Sonic grabbed Tails’ body and lifted it up. Draon grabbed the Chaos Emerald.

“I don’t know how, but it looks like this guy took out Sloth,” Draon stated.

“He’s strong, so I wouldn’t doubt it,” Sonic replied with a smile. Sonic looked over Tails, whom appears to be unconscious at the moment. “The real question is, what is he doing here? I told him to stay put and keep an eye on Amy and Cream.”

Sonic and Draon returned to where they had left Knuckles. Knuckles was just getting up, rubbing his head.

“Jeez Sonic, did you have to be so rough?” he groaned.

“You remember what happened?!” Draon gasped in surprise.

“Yeah, most of it,” Knuckles replied. “That guy snuck up on me, but I gave him a good whooping or two before he got me. My body felt weird, and the next thing I knew he was controlling it. I tried to push him out, but no luck.”

“I thought it seemed like that guy wasn’t fighting me with your fullest potential!” Sonic chuckled.

Draon stood in awe, amazed that Knuckles had such persistence to fight off Sloth. Knuckles noticed Draon.

“So, you’re Draon, right?” he questioned.

“Yeah,” Draon answered.

Knuckles walked up to him and held out his right hand. Draon grabbed it and the two shook hands.

“Thanks for helping get rid of that guy!” Knuckles said.

“Don’t mention it!” Draon replied, letting go of Knuckles’ hand.

Knuckles turned his attention towards Tails.

“What happened to him?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Sonic answered. “We found him like this while we were chasing Sloth.”

Tails slowly opened his eyes and looked at Sonic.

“S-Sonic…” he said weakly.

“Tails!” Sonic exclaimed. “Are you okay? What happened? Why are you here?”

“Something chased me,” Tails explained, his voice slowly returning to normal. “I don’t know what it was, but none of the weapons on the Tornado would affect it. I checked on Amy and the others to make sure they were okay, told them to find safety, and tried to lead the things away from them. It did follow me, but I got hurt in the process. It kept saying t wanted my body or something like that. I followed your path and hoped to find you for help. Luckily, I wound up here. When I arrived, something else attacked me. I thought it was that thing, so I defended myself. That’s all I can remember.”

“Don’t worry about it buddy,” Sonic said in a relieved voice. Sonic turned to Draon. “Draon, can you use that spell you used on Knuckles to heal Tails?”

“I can try,” Draon told him.

Sonic set Tails gently down on the ground. Draon bent over and placed his hand over Tails’ body.

“Chaos Rejuvenation!” he called out.

Draon’s hands began to produce an aura like the one that surrounded Knuckles, but Tails’ body didn’t react.

“What’s going on?” Sonic wondered. “Why isn’t he glowing like Knuckles was before?”

“Because he’s not really hurt!” Draon informed. “He’s faking it!”

“What?!” Sonic gasped.

“What do you mean?!” Knuckles questioned.

Tails raised his hand up and pointed it at Draon. His hand was enshrouded by shadows and suddenly shot itself at Draon. The attack grazed Draon’s right side, but it was enough to cause him to bleed. The shadow faded and Tails slowly rose to his feet. Sonic and Knuckles looked on in confusion.

“You went and ruined my plan!” Tails cackled in the boy’s voice.

“Envy!” Draon growled.

Chapter 10: Holding Back

“What did you just say?” Sonic asked Draon, his face showing signs of confusion.

“But how?!” Draon questioned, seeming to ignore Sonic. “Your mark… It’s…”

Envy gave a smirk and reached behind his back, pulling off an orange piece of cloth that looked identical to Tails’ fur. It even felt the same.

“I simply covered it,” Envy stated, waving the cloth in front of him. “I don’t know how you know about me, dragon, nor do I really care. However, I do care that you ruined my plan.”

“I see, so you don’t remember me either?” Draon replied.

Sonic stepped forward, unable to believe the sight before him.

“What did you do to Tails?!” Sonic demanded.

Envy gave a small chuckle and turned to face Sonic.

“Nothing,” he answered. “I simply promised Tails I’d help him become a hero and he willingly gave up his body.”

“That’s a lie!” Sonic growled.

“Is it really?” Envy asked him, closing his eyes and giving another snicker.

“Tails is my friend!” Sonic explained. “I know him better than anyone! He’s a genius! There’s no way he’d buy a lie like that! Even if he did, he wouldn’t team up with a creep like you!”

“How do you know what he’s thinking?” Envy cackled. “Did you ever ask him what he thought?”

Sonic paused for a moment. Envy did make a point; Sonic rarely asked Tails what his thoughts were unless he seemed really depressed or angry.

“Let me put this into perspective for you,” Envy said. Envy began reciting Tails’ darkest thoughts to Sonic. Tails’ soul begged him not to, saying that he didn’t think that way anymore. Envy ignored the pleas and focussed his attention on Sonic. “Tails always looked up to as a hero, which you are. You’re his idol! He hoped that one day he could be just like you. So, he worked night and day to help you out, doing everything in his power to help you save the day. Everyone regards you as a hero, both in this world, and in others. But, how often is Tails’ name ever mentioned among them?”

Sonic stood motionless, he had never thought about that before.

“Tails is the reason you’re as famous as you are, but he gets no credit!” Envy informed. “Did you ever think that maybe, deep down, he was jealous of you?”

“Don’t listen to him, Sonic!” Knuckles called out.

Sonic didn’t listen to Knuckles; he was too lost in his own mind.

“Sonic!” Draon shouted. “Envy has the ability to manipulate the darkness in someone’s heart! He can make even the tiniest thought become consuming! Don’t listen to him!”

“Why shouldn’t he?” Envy laughed. “Those thoughts are still there nonetheless. Sonic didn’t pay attention to Tails when he tried giving him his newest invention. He had spent sleepless nights on it, and Sonic didn’t even take the time to hear him out. He was heartbroken, desperate to get Sonic’s opinion! In that moment, Tails began to wonder if the reason Sonic left was because he didn’t need his help anymore. Sonic was the big hero, not him. To think, maybe if Sonic hadn’t been so caught up in being the hero, Tails might not have submitted so willingly!”

Sonic’s eyes widened. It was his fault Envy got Tails! He remembered Tails trying to talk to him, but he was in too big of hurry to notice. Sonic always appreciated Tails’ inventions, but was unaware this time that Tails wanted to help him.

Sonic looked at the figure standing before him and clenched his fists tightly. He charged at Envy with full-speed. Envy smirked and stood in place. Amazingly enough, with Tails’ eyesight, he had the ability to see Sonic in motion. He couldn’t see everything, but he could make out the figure enough to catch Sonic’s fist in front of his face. Sonic tried to punch him with his left hand as well, but Envy caught it too.

“You’re stronger than this,” Envy pointed out. “So why aren’t you fighting me like you did Sloth?”

Sonic gritted his teeth and tried to sweep Envy off of his feet. Envy wrapped Tails' two tails around each other and began spinning them like a propeller. He flew into the air, letting go of Sonic’s hands and avoiding the attack.

“I don’t even need to use my powers to deal with you!” Envy bellowed. “Tails’ alone should be enough!”

Sonic jumped into the air after Envy, but Envy simply flew higher out of his reach. Try as he might, there was no way Sonic could reach him. However, as he fell, Sonic caught glimpse of the two tails spinning faster than usual. He noticed a vortex of wind forming around them.

“Tail Tornado!” Envy shouted in Tails’ voice.

Envy swung the tails forward, sending a tornado of wind at Sonic. Sonic could actually see the wind in front of him. As it got closer, Sonic could feel his skin being scraped by the force. Knuckles, whom had jumped in the air, pulled him out of the way before it hit him directly. The vortex seemed to explode into a burst of wind energy, sending Sonic and Knuckles down to the ground.

“I didn’t know Tails could that,” Sonic said, struggling to lift his body up after being thrown on his back.

“I don’t think Tails even knew he could,” Knuckles replied, having the same difficulty getting up after being knocked on his stomach.

Knuckles looked Draon and nodded his head. The two then both turned their attention to Sonic. Sonic was now standing. Envy landed directly in front of him.

“Looks like your little friend is stronger than what even you gave him credit for,” Envy cackled.

Sonic tried to punch him, but Envy simply jumped back a bit. Sonic was just about to charge again, but something grabbed him from behind. He turned his head and saw that Draon had grabbed his arms. Draon lifted him into the air and flew off with him.

“What are you doing?!” Sonic exclaimed.

“You’re no match for him the way you are now,” Draon said. “Envy’s not even using his own power, so what makes you think you can hurt him when you're not even willing to face Tails?!”

Sonic tried to object, but Draon ignored his shouting and kicking. They were both over the ocean, Angel Island slowly disappearing over the horizon. Sonic finally settled down, knowing that what Draon said was the truth.

Knuckles watched them leave and sighed with relief, returning his attention to Envy. Envy was somewhat impressed to see that Knuckles would risk his own life for Sonic’s safety. If Sloth had truly been like Knuckles, Envy wouldn’t have killed him.

“I see,” Envy said with a smile, closing his eyes. “You wanted him to get away.”

Envy turned his back to Knuckles, not seeing him as much of a threat. He began walking away towards the edge of the island.

“We’re not finished here!” Knuckles yelled.

“Maybe you aren’t, but I am,” Envy replied. “I have no reason to fight you, you aren’t a challenge. Don’t worry about your precious Master Emerald; I have no need to destroy it like that fool, Wrath. So long as I have this body, not even the Master Emerald can affect me!”

Though he stood battle-ready, Knuckles didn’t bother going after Envy as he left. He knew very well that he couldn’t stop him. Besides, there was one more reason not to go after him.

“This is your fight, Sonic,” he thought. “Good luck!”

Chapter 11: Gift

Sonic and Draon now lay up against a tree on the mountainside they had gone down to originally reach Angel Island. The sky had grown dark, stars slowly leaving sight as a wave of dark gray clouds moved in. Sonic looked at Draon, whom held his side. He was using his healing spell to heal the wound Envy had given him. At first it wasn’t anything serious, but carrying Sonic the entire way had caused the wound to expand. It was healing rather nicely, now just a small scratch.

“You alright?” Sonic asked.

“Yeah, don’t worry about it,” Draon replied. “Injuries to me aren’t as easy to heal as on others. Since we dragons fight together, we expect one another to heal anyone who gets injured.”

Sonic still had trouble believing that Envy got Tails. He still refused to believe it and thought it was just some kind of trick. After all, he wanted Tails to stay behind so he wouldn’t get involved. Draon noticed that Sonic was worried.

“Sonic, I have to ask you something,” Draon said. “Why didn’t you fight Envy like you did Sloth? I know Tails is your friend, but so is Knuckles.”

“I-I just can’t…fight him!” Sonic answered. He tilted his head down towards the ground. One would expect him to start crying, but he did not. “Tails isn’t just my friend, he’s practically a brother to me! He always looked up to me, I know that much. He’s young, but very clever. He always followed me around, helping me out when I needed it. I’ve had scuffles with just about everyone, but never him!* He is someone I just can’t bring myself to fight!”

“But if you don’t fight him, you’ll never get to Envy,” reminded Draon.

Sonic sighed. He was very confused, not knowing if he could really do it. Sonic thought about making sure Amy and the others were okay, but Draon told forbade him from going until morning. With his mind currently unstable, Sonic probably wouldn’t be able to fight anyone. The two decided to rest, seeing how Envy had not come after them and they weren’t being attacked by anyone else. In fact, Sonic did not have any incoming signals on his locator watch.

Meanwhile, Envy was currently crossing the ocean using a piece of wood as a surfboard and Tails twin tails, like a propeller, to push it forward. He had stopped at a tiny island to rest. The island had nothing but sand, grass, and two coconut trees in the dead center. The island itself was no bigger than a typical schoolyard playground. Envy lay up against one of the trees.

“This would be much faster if I could just fly there,” he sighed. “However, even with my power aiding his, Tails still can’t fly too far for too long. I could always use my wings, but since I’m still adjusting to Tails’ body, it could seriously hurt him. Oh well, I have to admit this is fun. Wrath and Greed are both on the next continent, and I’m guessing Pride’s there as well.” He looked back towards the mainland where Sonic and Draon had fled. “I trust that Lust will bring me that hedgehog.”

Tails had given up trying to break free of the prison his was in. He had tried all day and couldn’t budge it at all. After witnessing the fight with Sonic, Tails knew Sonic cared too much about him to seriously hurt him. Now Tails felt really miserable, Envy was right about him being a burden to Sonic. The only comforting thought he had was the fact that Envy promised not kill Sonic. He slowly cried himself to sleep, completely helpless.

The next morning left the sky covered in gray clouds. Sonic and Draon tracked back through the mountains and forests, all the way to Tails’ workshop. Sonic had insisted on visiting it, just needing confirmation that it was really Tails. Since Sonic had to slow down for Draon, it was almost mid-morning by the time they had arrived. Sonic burst through the door and ran down the stairs to the main part of Tails’ workshop.

“Tails!” he called.

After receiving no reply, Sonic approached the workbench Tails had previously been working at and slammed his fists on it, putting his head in-between them.

“He really did get Tails…” Sonic said in a low voice.

Draon wanted to say something comforting, but couldn’t think of anything to say. Sonic lifted his head up and noticed what Tails had been working on. Sonic saw a note Tails had left for him in order to give it to him as a gift. Sonic looked at the letter carefully and remembered what Tails had tied to say before he left. He also remembered Envy’s words.

“Is this what you wanted to give me?” he thought as he picked up the pair of shoes and examined them.

He removed his own sneakers, revealing his blue human-like feet. Sonic strapped on the Jet Shoes. Sonic felt a small tingling sensation on the bottom of his feet, but it soon faded. The shoes felt exactly like his sneakers, just as light and aerodynamic.

“What are those?” Draon wondered.

“A gift!” Sonic answered, giving a faint smile. “Let’s go!”

The two left the workshop and stood outside. They approached the edge of the cliff and gazed at the ocean. Sonic was anxious to try out Tails’ invention, but the note had suggested that he wait about an hour or so during the first run.

“Don’t worry, buddy! I’ll get you back!”

Sonic and Draon both ran off towards the west. There was a small group of houses not too far away. They arrived at an open meadow, surrounded by a small amount of tree and lots of flowers of various colors. The house were all a dark peach-type color, the roofs were brown and resembled little mushroom tops, only with a point at the top. Stone chimneys rose out of each of them and each house has a couple round windows. Sonic approached one of them and knocked, but received no answer.

“Amy!” he called.

When he still got no reply, Sonic grew worried. He went up to another and knocked. The door opened, causing Sonic to sigh with relief. A 4-ft. tall rabbit that also walked on her hind legs appeared. She had peach-colored skin, and long rabbit ears. At the end of each ear was a small patch of brown fur that outlined it. She had a brown tuff of hair sticking out over her forehead, and brown fur patches around her light brown eyes. She wore a long pinkish-purple dress, with a crimson red buttoned vest over it. She had a red tie around her neck, and also wore gloves and red high-heeled shoes with a golden flap.

“Why hello, Sonic,” she greeted in an elegant voice. “What brings you here? And who’s your friend?”

“This is Draon, Vanilla,” he replied kindly. “I was wondering if Cream was around.”

“She called last night and said she was staying Amy,” Vanilla answered. “They went shopping yesterday and she said that they were attending a midnight madness special at one store.”

Upon Sonic’s request, the rabbit pointed the direction of the city they had gone to. Sonic glanced at his locater watch and noticed a small signal coming from that very direction.

“That’s what I was afraid of,” he said in a worried voice.

Sonic didn’t show Vanilla that he was worried and thanked her. She bowed politely and Sonic and Draon headed in the said direction.

(*Author’s Note: Sonic Pinball Party is the only game where Sonic and Tails have truly fought each other as enemies, and that can't really be considered a fight. I'm not counting Sonic Championship, also known as Sonic the Fighters, or Sonic Battle.)

Chapter 12: Evil in the City

Sonic and Draon hurried through the meadow-like region, eventually to the point where it became less flowers and trees, and more grass. The city was in view just over the horizon, a road-like pathway leading up to it. Sonic eyelids closed partly upon hearing a strange sound.

“I don’t think so!” he growled, jumping into the air and coming straight down. He landed on a shadow creature that resembled an ordinary dog, but covered in blackness. The creature disappeared without a trace. “Shadow creatures!”

“Then I guess you were right when you said one was nearby,” Draon replied.

Since there were far fewer shadows in the area, Sonic and Draon had no trouble pinpointing their location. Several shadow creatures of all species charged at them from all angles. The two destroyed them all without difficulty. Soon an army surrounded them, from the sky it would look like something as big was about to fall on them.

Sonic and Draon both stood back to back, knowing that getting away wouldn’t be easy. Draon soon felt a strange feeling inside of his body, one he hadn’t felt in a long time.

“Sonic, jump now,” Draon whispered.

“Why?” Sonic questioned.

“Just do it!” Draon replied.

Sonic did as Draon said and leapt as high as he could into the air. Draon did the same, but used his wings to hover overhead. The shadowy creatures lunged after them in a straight line.

“Perfect!” Draon thought.

Draon opened his mouth wide and let loose a stream of fire at the creatures. The lines of creatures caught on fire one after the other until they all disappeared. Sonic landed on the scorched ground below, Draon right after. Draon was panting heavily from the action.

“Whoa, Draon!” Sonic said in amazement. “That was awesome!”

“Guess I just needed the right moment,” Draon replied with a tired laugh.

A few more waves of shadow creatures could be seen coming at them from the direction of the city. Sonic curled into a ball once again and smashed through one wave. After both Sonic and Draon beat down a few waves, the rest seemed to stop coming after them, almost as if they were scared. Sonic and Draon both finally made their way into the city.

The city resembled an ordinary human city. The buildings were both short and tall, several skyscrapers reaching towards the sky. The city streets and stores were crowded with anthropomorphic animals all around, too many different species to name them all.

“So many! We never had anything like this back when I was around,” Draon gasped in awe. “How are we ever going to find your friends?”

“Leave that to me!” Sonic responded, giving a smile and a thumbs-up.

Sonic quickly grabbed Draon’s hand and ran throughout the crowded streets, leaving any loose papers, bags, etc., floating in the air behind him. Draon wasn’t used to moving at the speed, but didn’t really mind it. Draon eyed the surroundings carefully, taking notice of a few shadow creatures stationed at several points in the city. However, none of them were attacking. Draon wasn’t sure about the reason, but he assumed that it was because of everyone in the city. Whichever one of the seven was hiding out in the city, they didn’t want to draw attention.

A pink hedgehog and peach-colored rabbit were seen walking down one of the street. The hedgehog was about 3 feet in height, wearing a red dress with the bottom edge being white. She had light-green eyes, with two long eyelashes extending from her eyelids. Three strands of hair stood out over her forehead, much like Tails’ did. Like Sonic, she also wore white gloves, only she had gold bracelets on over the ends. Her shoes resembled boots, red with a white line running vertically down the center. She was carrying a blue plastic bag in her left hand.

The rabbit was barely over two feet in height, and was almost half the age of the hedgehog. She had long rabbit ears, brown tuffs of fur at the ends. Small brown patches of fur also lay atop her head and around her eyes, which were also brown. She had one long eyelash extending from each of her eyelids. She wore white gloves like the others, and an orange dress with a white collar and blue tie. Her shoes were orange as well, but the part around her white socks was a yellowish color.

The two continued walking when a blue streak rushed past them, causing the hedgehog’s bag to fly in front of her as she tried to hold on to it, their dresses waved in the breeze.

“Hey, that was Sonic!” the hedgehog exclaimed.

Sonic had heard the voice and skid to a stop. He turned around, still holding onto Draon, and ran towards them, stopping in directly front of them. He let go of Draon.

“Amy! Cream!” Sonic said happily. “Thank goodness you’re okay!”

“Can you give me a warning next time you do that?!” Draon griped, coughing a bit.

“Sorry about that,” Sonic apologized.

Sonic soon felt something embrace him. He looked down to find the hedgehog hugging him tightly.

“Oh, Sonic!” she said. “You came all this way just to see me?”

“Nice to see you too, Amy,” Sonic replied with a bit of hesitation, trying to push her away.

“Sonic, who’s your friend?” the rabbit asked.

“I’ll tell you in a minute, Cream,” Sonic told her. “Just as soon as I can breathe again.”

After finally getting loose from Amy’s grasp, Sonic regained his original footing and introduced Draon to both of them. Sonic was relieved to know that they were both safe. His locator watch told him the signal was coming from the city, but that’s all it could do. Draon wasn’t as sure as Sonic was, but he couldn’t very well just ask the girls to remove their clothing so he could examine their backs. Not only would it tell them that they knew, but it would also come out very wrong.

“Why were you worried about us?” Amy asked.

“Oh, no reason,” Sonic answered. “We just heard a rumor that there was something wrong going on in this city.”

“Sheesh, first Tails, now you!” Amy groaned. “When is somebody just going to tell us what’s going on here?!”

“Did you say Tails?” Sonic asked suspiciously.

“Yeah, he seemed really worried about something yesterday and told us not to leave the city!” Amy answered. “Isn’t that right, Cream?”

“Um…yeah…” Cream said in a quiet voice.

Sonic and Draon both knew something was up. They had both seen Tails the previous day as well, or Envy actually, and he had said something about checking on Amy and Cream as well. The shadow creatures attacking them, the ones stationed throughout the city, it couldn’t just be a coincidence. However, they both figured that Envy wouldn’t be in the city. They glanced at each other, Draon’s eyes telling Sonic to remember what he had been told.

Sonic eyed both of his friends carefully. He then realized that Cream was being very quiet, causing Sonic to wonder the reason as to why. It was more as if she knew something but something prevented her from doing so. It was then that he noticed something very odd.

“Where’s Cheese?” he asked, not in a questionable tone, but as if he was interrogating her.

“Cheese?” Draon wondered.

“It’s her friend, a Chao,” Sonic informed. “He’s always with her.”

Cream gave a small gasp and rolled her eyes a bit towards Amy. Sonic focussed on her and for a moment, saw her eyes change from green to red, then back again. Sonic’s eyes slowly gazed down towards the bag she was holding, and realized that it was moving a tiny bit. Cream closed her eyes and threw her head forward.

“Sonic, you have to run!” she blabbed out, her eyes swelling with tears. “It’s a trap! That’s not Amy!”

“I guess that proves you don’t care about your friend’s fate,” Amy stated in a cold, deep voice.

“Draon, is that…?” Sonic began to ask.

“Yeah, it’s Lust!” Draon confirmed.
