Wave frowned at Jet as he dismounted his Type-J.
"What's been going on, Jet? This is the third race you've lost today. The eighth this week."
"Just a losing streak, I think," Jet replied, walking towards his hovercraft.
"Yes, I just thought..."
"Wave, there's nothing wrong, if that's what you're wondering. Last year, you know, at the Ex World Grand Prix Alternate? I hated the weather. A lot of rain, except for Sand Ruins. I think that was why I got fourth. But remember how Sonic acted every time it rained? How he practically ran every race? Kept running out of air?"
"It was funny," Wave giggled as Jet entered his room, her behind him. "You know, you have to will this losing streak to get better. They don't last long."
Jet nodded. A losing streak wasn't forever. But, he suddenly realized, only two people had been triumphant during the Ex World Grand Prix Alternate - The second annual Ex Wold Grand Prix - and they had tied in first place. Nobody had known the girl's name, but the boy was a black-red hedgehog named Shadow or something like that. Jet had been infuriated when he had come in fourth place out of the whole thing, Sonic being third, and in second place none other than Wave. But still...
"Wave, I want to watch that video Storm took of the last race in the Ex World Grand Prix Alternate, now, please."
"Okay," she said, running out of the room to retrieve the footage. Coming back, she had a tape in hand. She played it and a projecter showed the race in perfect detail on the wall.
Towards the end, he caught the tie between the two hedgehogs. There wasn’t a millisecond’s difference as far as he could tell.
"Could you frame by frame the end again, Wave?" She did. And Jet caught it again, and indeed there was not even a millisecond between their finishes, except... Outside in Metal City - the site for the first race of any E. W. G. P. - on one of the digital billboards, came an announcement for what, but the Ex World Grand Prix Twilight Zone, third annual Ex World Grand Prix!
"Wave, I am going to enter. Only this time, I'm going to win!"
Now all he had to do was dig enough rings out of his pockets to enter, three-thousand to be exact. (The entry fee had been changed to allow more people to enter, because there are only seven Chaos Emeralds.) As he counted up his last ring, he set off to enter, hoping with all of his soul for victory.
